Windows needs activating after two years?

my computer starts to open XP Professional and then goes to a 4 bit screen resolution and says this version of windows needs to be activated. I have been running this version for two years. When I click on activate windows screen, it is so poor quality,

nothing is readable and I can't access anything. Is this a virus attack or genuine Windows problem?
