Since auto update on 25/4/2013 my laptop will not start unless I run startup recovery

Windows 7 home premium 64 bitI had an auto update on 25th April now my computer onm;ly starts if I run startup reovery, and then it reverts to a pre up date configuration, and when I boot again it reloads the update , and the cycle starts againHow do I repair the update?Is the update essential?Is the update good?thanks
