windows vista IRQL issues

I have an HP Pavilion a1730n which I have had since 2006 and never had a problem with it.  I have done all the updates and currently instead of windows vista I am running windows 8.  I did the last updates approximately 6 weeks ago and I got the blue screen

of death.  It stated that irql not less than or something like that.  The reason I don't know what the code is on the bsod is because the computer will not stay on long enough for me to get that or try to fix it. I recovered the computer back to windows vista

and get all the way to sign on for the first time and it will give me the bsod again and shut down.  I have no different graphics cards or installed anything that was different from the computers original software and equipment.  Please tell me how to fix

this.  I really need my computer for school as I am falling behind.  Thank you.
