windows vista chkdsk vista

i felt that i needed to do a chkdsk /r.  i rebooted the computer, a dell inspiron 530, and the chkdsk started.

 

when it got to 15% of stage two, 388227 of 455168 index entries processed, it stopped.  i waited fifteen minutes for it, and that is where it stayed.

 

 

i unplugged the computer, then started it again.  the dskchk ran again, and stopped the same place.  it did this a total of three times.

for several tries, it would run the thing even when i was pressing another key to cancel it.  it took four tries to get it canceled.

 

what does the stupid thing think it is doing?
