Windows Vista - Windows Defender Error 0xc80000222 AND Windows Update Error 800800005

I replaced the hard drive on my HP laptop and used the recovery disks to restore my computer to the factory setting.  I also uninstalled Norton Anti Virus, downloaded Mozilla Firefox, and downloaded Avast Antivirus.  I attempted to update but got two (2)

errors - Windows Defender Error 0xc80000222 (The program can't check for definition updates.) and Windows Update Error 800800005 (Windows could not search for new updates.).  I even attempted to install Microsoft Fix to perform diagnostics, but it did not

install (We're sorry but Windows PowerShell failed to perform).  My system panel says that Windows is activated.  Ultimately, I want to use my upgrade disk for windows 8.  I have used these recovery disks before without any problem.  Thanks.
