Windows XP (32bit) based system. Intel Celeron D processor. Has CD/DVD and another CD with burner and USB ports. Bought as refurbished. No back up disks or original software.

Had been moving files from it to external hard-drive and then using the external hard-drive to put the files in to newer, Windows 7, based system.

A couple of times the older system would not boot up correctly, but had screen then and could use system restore to get the system operating correctly.

THEN out of the blue the older system would not start up and no monitor screen at all so cannot use any of the recovery menus as they cannot be seen. Can hear hard-drive spinning, light blink indicating activity - have tried turning power off and then holding

power button in, restarting while holding F-8.

Have tried to down-load recovery disks, re-boot files for USB et cetera.

No new hardware has been installed or anything else that may conflict.

Any suggestions on what could be attempted ?

Cannot afford to spend hundreds on taking the system anywhere.
