Scan gets hung up

I am having trouble with MS Security Essentials. The scans get hung up about 90% through the progress bar. The scans get just so far and then stops part way through. The rotating icon continues but the clock (time elapsed) stops. Microsoft does not offer

any support for this version. Any ideas out there???
