windows 8 Asking to activate windows

I am running Windows 8 and every time I turn puter on I am asked to activate Windows. When I try, it tells me that Windows cannot be activated at this time please try later. I have been doing this for quite some time now but to no avail.

I have tried updating to 8.1 but cannot do so and this is what it comes up with:

"Your PC is running an enterprise or volume licensed version of Windows 8 and cannot be updated using the Windows Store. Contact your system administrator for mote information on how to update your PC to windows 8.1"

I bought this computer in the Spring of 2013 from a reputable chain store and I have gone back there; I was told that when the message comes up, there should be a phone number for me to call to be able to activate but no such number does come up.

Where do ùi go from here?
