This issue still is not solved - I had to step back and wait until I had the time. After a Windows Update (May 2014), my Dell Inspiron i660s computer rebooted to a black screen with the error "no SATA was found".

The "you have updates" popped up, I said "OK" (not set to automatic). The Dell was running W8 - had not allowed the update to the 8.1 trial. When the updates completed, I was given the "must reboot" screen and allowed it - on reboot the screen was black and

said that no SATA was found. Having run the diagnostics, the system is all good - except that there is no hard drive found. Dell does not provide a startup CD, but since the computer won't even boot - there is no option to restore.

I removed the hard drive unit as suggested on the Dell site and then replaced it. Still nothing, same error. Meanwhile, I have a SATA enclosure for the hard drive I originally asked about and all of my files are there and the hard drive reads just fine (I

am not yet willing to lose these files) - I was able to get the log of that fatal Windows update -- will it help? So the hard drive is not dead -- what must I do to get the computer to recognize it?
