had a HP laptop windows7, made 6 backup cds,now have a dell laptop windows 8 laptop.i need my stuff!

I had a HP laptop windows 7,i made a set of 6 CD'S on that computer. I now have just bought a Dell windows 8 laptop that when I tried to use the cd's , it told me I had to connect an external hard drive, I bought that hard drive, its so complicated, I don't

know how I got the message to get a hard drive because its gone!!tells me to choose files that aren't there! Is this even possible? Id really like to have my pictures and videos back now!agh!!
