nellyc Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Hi all my laptop has just started to smell around where the mains plug - in and the light on the mains adaptor goes out when i plug it in to the laptop so the laptop now wont charge or run off the mains ! I thought it may be the battery but its holding what charge it has normally and it is not leaking & would this cause it stop running off the mains? Any Ideas ???? Thanks Nellyc Quote
Tootech Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Most likely, the laptop power socket is faulty. Please don't plug the mains adapter in again until you have had it repaired. Laptop socket repair is a tricky business, sometimes it is just a soldering job, sometimes a board repair job. Either way, the laptop does need to be taken to pieces to get to the offending items. The best bet is to take it to a repair shop and ask for an estimate. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 The smell you found was probably the connector itself burning away. Laptops are extremely fiddly things to work on, you do need an expert. So I can only agree with Tootech, don't try to use it any more until you have had it looked at and repaired. Seth Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 I specialize in laptop repair, and I assure you that TT and Nev are correct. However (I always have a however:), I would not recommend you repair the connection. I suggest you retrieve needed data from the drive and purchase a new laptop. RandyL Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 You can hook up a laptop drive with an adaptor to a desktop. I have one and have done it. Here is an example of the adaptor. BeeCeeBee Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Hi Nelly Please do not go out and buy a new laptop simply based on what you read here. If that is your choice then fine but you may want someone to actually look at it and make sure that it is not something simple. Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help is in no postion to make that sort of evaluation. Certainly you can keep your hard drive and others will give you the best suggestions on how to make use of it. Guest Wolfeymole Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Well if you wanted to fit it internally Nelly then you would need an adapter like this. http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/cooldrives/new-low-profile-design2.jpg That's if you have IDE connectors on the board. Alternatively you could go for some like this that allows you to run it externally. SATA and IDE Hard Drive & Optical Drive USB Adapter Kit COMBO Quote
