Guest Keith.Van.Wetter@gmail.com Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 1) I have the same problem, although System Restore is off. I have Docs&Settings on a second hard drive, and used RegCrawler to change the drive letter. I then verify everything in Regedit (ex: search for any entries of C:\Documents and Settings, and if needed, change drive letter to D:\). However, upon reboot, though I have admin rights, the settings revert to the previous! 2) Incidentally, I have been told that it is possible during XP installation to actually choose to which drive one wishes to install Docs&Settings, and yet I have never been able to find the screen that shows this option! Has anybody seen this mysterious option? 3) How does one discover the disk volume#? i.e., if currently "\Devices \HarddiskVolume1\Documents And Settings" and I want to have Docs&Settings on drive G or H, how do I know what the volume# should be, considering that there are multiple partitions on 2 drives? Is it merely the obvious, starting with disk 0, counting each consecutive partition as the subsequent volume#? This also frustratingly reverts to the previous setting when changed!
Guest xCal Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 Re: registry revert many times, but not allways, system restore off is practically equivalent to windows reinstallation, clean or repair option, when you have a hard problem. If you do this take care, save your documents first. "I have > Docs&Settings on a second hard drive, and used RegCrawler to change > the drive letter." this is a big problem, usually I ve seen letter changes are only possible with Windows Ok, and from windows, not outside windows. Think about repair install, but this should not respect Docs and Settings folder at all. Anyway, save your documents first, and if you are a principiant on this, call a computer tecnician, documents are the more valuable part of your computer. Finally, dont try registry changes, if you dont have a clue what re u doing really hope this helps, Carlos. <Keith.Van.Wetter@gmail.com> escribió en el mensaje news:1191701670.769562.130330@o80g2000hse.googlegroups.com... > 1) I have the same problem, although System Restore is off. I do not understand "Windows Ok". The reason why I have Docs&Settings on a different drive is so as to optimize the function (and it works well). The problem is that my niece disobeyed my orders for internet use, and she got us the Win32.virtob virus, which destroyed everything. I had to reinstall XP, but this time, I notice that my changes to the registry do not stay upon reboot. Registry Crawler is merely a faster way than manually changing each key using Regedit. I obviously have established the actual folders (copied, then deleted) on the second drive. All important documents are backed up anyway, so I'm not concerned. > Finally, dont try registry changes, if you dont have a clue what re u doing > really I DO have a clue what I'm doing, Carlos. However, I realize that when we installed Yahoo widgets is when everything changed, and I think that this was the problem, but it should allow me to change the registry settings (again) and stay that way.
