I could say "ditto", and a whole lot more. Ain't it the truth! Those are

my thoughts *exactly*.

| Well, yes and no. I think there's a bit more to it than that, if you

look

| a the world critically and carefully, and really care about the societal

| (not technological) changes affecting so many of us today.

|

| From what I've seen of many of these changes in society over the past 5+

| decades, I'm just not too impressed - with the major exception of race

| relations, of course.

|

| But as for ... personal responsibility, and personal accountability,

| nowadays? And perseverance (not just sound bites)? And the plethora

of

| single parent homes today, and the increasing breakup of the family unit?

| Ummm, count me out of "how great it is these days" (sociologically

| speaking).

Re: <PING> Bill in Colo.

Dan,

You *have* to realize when you cross fellow-posters boundaries. No

disrespect here, it's just what I note and see.

Angel has made it very clear she is a very private person, and you must

respect that. If she wants you to know something of a personal nature, I'm

sure she'll let you know.

Her desire for privacy and anonymity should have been obvious to you when

she let you know that she does not give out e-mail addresses. From that

point on, one must exhibit *appropriate* behavior, or risk the loss of

possibly good friend.

Dan, you are a very open type person. Please bear in mind that *most*

people are not as open about their lives as you. The biggest exception

would be self-help groups similar to AA, NA, etc., whose methods are quite

impressive.

Not trying to hurt your feelings,

Curt

A lot of it goes back to when the only way to communicate on the air

was by Morse Code. You'd generate dots and dashes just by turning the

transmitter on and off, that's why it came to be called CW (Continuous

Wave). Things like 73 and all the Q signals are abbreviations to try

to speed things up in that incredibly low-speed world.

And now you don't even have to know Morse to get a Ham license. The

world is ending!

Hi Tim,

All right, ANOTHER ham. The *worst* thing the FCC ever did was lift the

code requirement. Learning the code takes a lot of dedication, which showed

something serious about the applicant. It also served to keep out the

"lids"

"No lids, no kids, no space cadets..."

73,

Curt (ex WBØDOU)-gonna get that thing back too!

P.S. I would imagine there are a huge number of hams among us in these

Re: <PING> Bill in Colo.

I always thought MORSE Code was cool when I was a boy and even though I never

learned it; I think it is a shame that it is being done away with now. I

guess digital is the new wave of the future. Heck, with my tri-mode phone we

supposedly will not have any more analog signals or at least the FCC will not

require the wireless companies to continue to maintain their analog signal

towers after February 2008. In addition, the era of analog is ending by my

favorite airplane the A-10 Thunderbolt II (Warthog) with it titanium alloy

armor and its Gatling Gun being updated from analog to digital capabilities.

Finally, I will continue to enjoy and use analog technology especially on my

old Roland MT-32 music card to play old and outdated but very fun games on my

old IBM 486 PC with DOS 5 and Windows 3.1 -- Notice how I put DOS first ---

Re: <PING> Bill in Colo.

Dan,

Good old fashioned Morse Code is still be the best medium to use under

extremely adverse conditions. (Lightning storms, other QRM, just plain

scarcity of bandwidth (code takes up essentially no bandwidth, although that

does change with Xmitting speed, but it's still of little consequence).

Morse code, crude as it may be will still get through when nothing will.

Don't mis-understand me, sometimes *nothing* can get through, including

code. A significant Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) can wipe out

communications of *all* types for thousands of miles. Once in a while, a

ham with a lot of patience and savvy, will get short bursts of communication

through using code.

Fun, fun , hobby. And if you aren't careful, a *very* expensive hobby, as

nobody homebrews their systems anymore, the biggest reason is we can't get

the parts.

Curt,

Thanks, you hit the nail right.on the head.

I hope Dan pays attention and it does not go over his head. He does

take me serious. I do not appreciate his type of attention. I may soon tell

him to get lost! He would not be the first one that I told where to go.

Re: <PING> Bill in Colo.

Bill,

I have had reason to use the "Serenity Prayer" often more than once a day.

Wish I were one of your students. I used to have an electronics book that

Northwestern Electronics Institute used back in the 70's. It was called

"Electronic Communication" and was written by Robert Schrader. Had tube and

transistor theory in there. I liked the book because it dealt primarily

with RF, which just fascinates me. I lost that book in a move, and I've

"cried" about it ever since. It was a neat book in that it started out

assuming you didn't know a thing about electronics, or its' components. I'd

give anything to find that book again, but the finances are a little too

tight right now for that anyway.

It has amazed me how many teachers and students too who remember that book.

Yeah, and that definitely rings a bell. But it sure was awhile ago.

However, I bet if you looked hard enough online, you might, over time, be

able to find a used copy, somewhere. Or possibly at a really large used

bookstore that has a decent technical section. But I think it's getting

harder these days, as the computer section has (for all intents and

purposes) taken over the area formerly used by the electronics section, as I

see it. Changing times...
