Hey there

about 3 months ago i bought a new seagate sata 500gb HDD for my computer and i got it up and running great, but today, it has just dissapeared from my computer

when i do into disk management, it just says "Import Failed" next to the disk, and when i right click it to try and reactivate, it does nothing

my BIOS picks it up fine and recognises it as a 500gb sata drive

im worried that i might lose the data i have on it, all my school work is on it and so is all my music and vids etc, and i cant lose my school work, i would be screwed as you can imagine

is there anyway i can get it working again, im desperate to get it going again, i have only had the thing for a couple of months

my spec, if needed is:

Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.00ghz

2GB RAM

Geforce 7800gtx 256mb

ASUS P5B-VM Motherboard

Windows Vista Ultimate

also, the drive if needed comes up as a "ST3500320AS ATA Drive", and my device manager says it is working properly, so windows is obviously detecting it as connected correctly

please help, and thanks in advance http://www.pchelpforum.com/images/smilies/smiley.gif

Go to the Control panel then Administrative Tools then Computer Management on the left hand side at the bottom there is a setting called Disk Management click that and all your drives are in there - what does it say next and under the drive?

does that answer your question?

Not really no - I was looking for the status of the drive - but if you cant get that far then..........

Ok - Is the drive external?

if its internal have you tried moving the drive to another SATA slot on the MOBO?

Also check that the power and the SATA cable are secure at the drive end and the SATA cable at the MOBO end too - if you are using a SATAII drive - you should really be using 'latch' cables as they lock into place - but the cables supplied in the MOBO box will be standard and they slip on the connectors.

yes, i have tryed moving it to another port, nothing changed, and i have tryed replugging it, making everything is secure, so thats not the problem, and im not using a SATAII drive, just a regular SATA

and in answer to the status of the drive, it is set to dynamic, and it just says "Import Failed" under it, with no info to the right like my other 2 drives

hope this helps

Just had a look through your post.

What is the model number of your drive?

Perhaps at this point it would be a good idea to run the Seagate Diagnostics over it - it's a read only process. That will help determine whether or not the drive is actually at fault.

Follow the link below and accept the licence agreement etc. You want Seatools for DOS, the bootable ISO. Burn to CD, boot it and run the long test. It takes around 45 minutes.

Seagate Technology - SeaTools

Let us know the results.
