Ram- voltage??-EPP?? Do they work togther?

I have just upgraded my ram from 1 gig ddr2 to 3gig ddr2 and im getting blue screen on games, i am using the mother M2N VM HDMI the ram should work together.

I have included a screen shot of the ram via SIA.

The old ram worked perfect (DVQE1A), the new ram is the EXTREME DDR2 1066+ x2.

Also i recently updated my drivers for my 9500gt and a game would blue screen, i rolled back driver and now the game freezed and crashed?

Also i don't know if it is even the ram because without the new EXTREME DDR2 1066+ x2 ram i could run Crysis but all setting on low because i didn't have enough ram, the game would freeze randomly sometimes and i would have to "END IT NOW" i assumed it was cause i was playing on 1 gig vista 64 bit, and task manager would say 90-95 % ram usage. But when i put the new ram in and play a couple of games on both games it blue screens saying to remove any new hardware installed and something about memory dump?

No worries,

What I am after is working out the spec of the RAM - at the moment it is shown as running at 1.8V - is that what it is designed for?

Also, without the spec the timings cannot be compared.

To be able to refer to the manufacturers spec sheet, and compare that to the settings you are running is perhaps a first step to identifying a fault, or a change in the settings that might help.

Yep, that's great.

The memory is rated at 2.2V, your system is set at 1.8V according to your first post - that will be one reason why it is unstable.

Is your existing memory 1 stick or 2?

According to the manual, 3 sticks probably won't work, 1 will, 2 will and 4 will.

Also, I can't find the spec of your existing memory so I don't know what voltages you can run it at.

The Crucial memory advisor recommends some 1.8V and some 2.0V modules, but not 2.2V.

Computer memory upgrades for ASUS M2N-VM HDMI Motherboard from Crucial.com

For the moment I would remove the older memory and concentrate on getting the new memory running properly.

I can't see an issue with upping it, but go in steps and test it. Try 2.0V as a starter.

It may be that you will have to change your memory

Hope that helps.

My existing memory was 1 gig!

Well thank you for your prompt reply but i am still unclear on what to do next?

I booted my PC with just the 2 gig of new memory in and it crashed and then it wouldn't boot until i put my old ram back in, so do i put all ram back in and change some settings on bios (Voltage)?

So i start by trying 2.0 V and then 2.2V even though we don't know what my existing ram will go to in Voltage?

Also where will i find this information in bios, i had a quick look before but was not strictly looking for it,

and on the recomend ram from corsair it only goes up tto 2.0 so does that mean i may have to buy new ram?

Your older, 1GB memory - is it 1x1GB stick or 2 x 512MB sticks?

Look in your manual, section 2.4

Set the AI Overclocking to standard.

Your memory is rated at 2.2 Volts, you can set this in the BIOS, please try it, without your old memory fitted.

Back to your manual, section 1.7 System Memory.

Do you have your 2 x 1GB new memory installed in slots Dimm_A1 and DIMM_B1, as per diagram 1.7.2?

If your system won't boot correctly with your new memory , I think that you need to change it for the recommended memory.

Hold on though, as Dalo has a lot of system building experience and he may have another solution.

Thanks for reply:cool:

I went into BIOS and changed the ram from auto to manual and put it at 400mhz which i gather is 1.8v judging from CPU Z.

My older ram is just 1 stick of 1 gig pc2 8500

Also i have some screen shots that might be useful.

slot 1 and 2 are the new RAM

and slot 3 is the new RAM

You cannot install 3 x 1GB modules on your board and expect them to run correctly. Look in the manual section 1.7.2, two ways to run Single Channel mode, 2 ways to run Dual Channel mode. None of them utilise 3 memory modules. It may work, it may not, but there is no support for it.

Back to your manual, section 2.4.1, Jumperfree Configuration - memory voltage - it needs to be changed from Auto to 2.2 Volts to run your new memory.

I know your are worried about your old 1GB module, so leave all 3 memory sticks fitted, into BIOS, change voltage to 2.2V. Save and shutdown the system.

When you restart, your memory voltage will have changed - so, before you restart, pull out the old 1 GB module. Does it run?

If it doesn't, to reset everything, pull out the mains lead, take out the CMOS battery, look at section 1.9 in your manual and clear the CMOS settings. Battery back in, mains lead in and then unfortunately you are back to square one, and most probably need to buy fully compatible memory.

BTW, i cannot load your 3 piccies for some reason???

Dam this is getting frustrating now, spent the whole day and no results:(

when i put the new ram in it automaticly goes to 800mhz and then crashes

when i put old ram in it goes to 400mhz.

how do i change voltage it doesnt show any voltage things only mhz, and doesnt say anything about it in he manual.

Again thanks for the reply, hope i can get this sorted:o

Any advice anyone?

Yeah, it is a bit frustrating, but, lets have another go.

The manual I refer to is the download from Asus here

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

I'm struggling to understand why your manual doesn't refer to what I can see in the manual, and why you can't find the settings in your BIOS.

This is a screen shot of the advanced settings - according to your manual

Does it look like your BIOS?

Go to the Jumperfree menu, it should look like this

That is where you change the memory voltage.

yes ok ill go try:p i did get 3gig ram in before when i borrowed 2 gig ddr2 black dragon ramm ? Edited by Wondercai

I understand what you are saying about using 3GB RAM. The point is that when there are problems ie non booting systems, blue screen stop errors and the like, the best way to sort them is to use the recommended settings and troubleshoot from there.

If it all goes ok, and the problem is sorted, you can try what you like, until it trashes your system again.

Anything goes as long it will run. But at the moment we are still trying to get this one to run - hence following the manual to the letter.

I received your PM regarding this error message:

"Fix the problem that "Usable Memory" is unable to be detected completely if using 4G memory and AMD triple CPU."

Can you put everything in the thread rather than PM - it helps anyone else reading the thread with a similar fault.

A quick google for that fault came up with a few hits for the board M2A VM HDMI

download_item_4

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Forum- * NEW BIOS: 2001 *

In your first post your board is quoted as M2N VM HDMI

I can only find info on the 4G memory fault for the M2A VM HDMI

You know where I'm going with this - are you sure you've quoted the right board model?

I run an M2A VM board, and I've had troubles with 4GB high performance RAM, and had to change it back to standard RAM for it to run correctly.

To be honest I'm running out of ideas on this on this one. Perhaps a BIOS update would be a good idea - do it whilst only running your 1 GB stick at standard settings to prevent problems whilst running the update.

Failing that, change the memory for recommended memory for your board - I 've given you a link in an earlier post.

Thanks for your reply once more.

I updated my bios and messed around for some more hours and have now finally got the new 2 gig running, however if i put the old gig in i get an error message so i think i will leave it at 2 gig which is good enough.

Thanks alot for your help:)
