Replace hard drive in RAID 5 array

Can someone advise me on how to replace and rebuild a drive in my RAID

5 array. I have a Compaq ProLiant ML370 with 3 drives configured for

RAID 5. One drive failed and it is currently running on 2 drives. I

have a used drive from another old machine that I can use to rebuild

the array. If I shut it down and just replace the failed drive with

the new (used) one, will it automatically start to rebuild when I boot

the server back up? Will it prompt me for anything? Do I need to

"initialize" the drive? Any help or advice would be greatly

appreciated.

Is it a nearly identical drive? It should be....even if it's bigger, it

should be the same speed (you'll just lose the extra space).

Shouldn't be necessary if they're hot-swap drives.

It ought to, but you can go into the HP management tools to check. I suggest

reviewing HP's support site or help pages/doc before doing this.

No....

It is the same size drive out of a similar machine... But because of

the age I am unsure if its hot-swappable drives and controller

When in doubt, contact the mfr for tech support...that's my credo.
