TermServ License on XP Home to XP Pro upgrade

I upgraded an XP Home OS with XP Pro to get proper licensing to access a

Terminal Server but I still get the licensing error when trying to connect.

Is there a fix I can try? I don't want to do a clean installation if I don't

have to.

thanks

Which OS is the Terminal Server running?

You only get a free TS license when you connect to a W2K Terminal

Server. If you connect to a 2003 TS, you need a purchased TS CAL.

And if that doesn't solve the problem, can you post the *exact* error

message that you get, as well as the EventID and Source from the

EventLog on the Terminal Server?

Re: TermServ License on XP Home to XP Pro upgrade

It's a W2K TS. The previous installation on the workstation was XP Home

which gave the following error message when trying to connect.

"The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the

licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the remote computer again or

contact your server administrator."

After "upgrading" Home Edition to Professional edition I get the same error

message.

Is there a way to resolve the issue without performing a clean installation?

Thanks,

Doug

Re: TermServ License on XP Home to XP Pro upgrade -SOLUTION FOUND-

Re: TermServ License on XP Home to XP Pro upgrade -SOLUTION FOUND-

I found the solution to this problem here..

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/159e6ff8-4edb-43fd-8767-3d9858897e2c1033.mspx?mfr=true

Solution: If the previous solution does not resolve this problem, create a

backup of the MSLicensing registry key and its subkeys on the client, and

then remove the original key and subkeys by doing the following:

1.

On the client, navigate to the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSLicensing.

2.

Click MSLicensing.

3.

On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.

4.

In the File name box, type mslicensingbackup, and then click Save.

5.

If you need to restore this registry key in the future, double-click

mslicensingbackup.reg.

6.

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the

deletion of the MSLicensing registry subkey.

7.

Close Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

When the client is restarted, the missing registry key is rebuilt.
