Hi

Hope someone can help me, it's my first post and Im a beginner so be patient with me :)

I have Windows 98 and I used to be able to plug my headphones in whilst using my pc but now when I plug the headphones in there is no sound. I could have deleted something but Im not sure what to do. I have Windows Media Player and it plays the actual film but there is no sound, neither can I play my music cd's.

Hope you can help

Many thanks

Spike

Hi Spike

Welcome to FPCH

What you can try is going into device manager and uninstall the sound then reboot and let windows "find" it again.

Do you have the 98 disk to hand also?

Hi

No I don't have the cd to hand.

If I uninstal the sound then reboot will Windows find sound automatically?

I should Spike but I would really do a thorough search for the windows 98 discs if you think that there is a chance you may have them.

I really do not remember if windows 98 has a system restore (a sure sign of age- mine I mean) but if it does I would try that first. Pick a date when the sound was working.

If not check back here before you uninstall.

Thanks for trying to help

Have you tried to do the uninstall that Wolfey suggested?

If it works the lack of the discs won't matter. The discs would be needed only if there is some form of corruption of your operating system.

Most likely it will either work or remain much as it is. Since you know for sure that you don't have the discs you may as well give it a try.

If that doesn't help, can you tell us as much as possible about your machine, make model etc and if possible the type of sound system you have. For example, is it a separate sound card, or integral to the computer?

Hi

Still trying. Make of pc is Megatronics, PC DVD Dxr2, Model no 986M, cant see anything about sound card so I think it's integral to the pc:confused:

You havn't told us if you tried to uninstall the sound as Wolfey suggested.

Not tried to un-install yet as you said to check back with you before I un-install! Will try that next. I can watch dvd's, etc, just can't hear anything.

Sorry Spike you are right, I did say that. It seems the worst that can happen is that the sound will not reinstall but since you have no sound now there is not much to lose.

We haven't heard from you Spike as to whether or not that worked, but if it didn't, click start, control panel, then "sound and audio devices" when that opens click "hardware tab, are there any yellow exclamation marks? if so where?

I think what Nev meant Spike was to go into Device Manager by right clicking My Computer then choosing the Hardware Tab then Device Manager.

Hi again, after a look round I found DMscheduler is part of "Driver Magic" this is a program that is supposed to look after all the drivers on your machine. Do you have this Driver Magic program installed? If so it may be telling you there are drivers either corrupt or missing. In the case of your sound this is highly probable. first do try the uninstall method and see if Windows will re-create new drivers. If not, we may need some more info about the sound system so we can find a source for a driver download.
