domain controller prevent failure?

Recommended Posts

I am new to this job - there is a domain controller and a backup

domain controller , Windows 2003 server, - any idea how the backup

domain controller needs to be set up? And if the primary domain

controller fails, all we should need to do is switch the network

cables and the back up controller should take over? Any tips on where

I can find additional information will be really helpful. Thank you

very much!

Hello,

since Windows 2000, there isn't anymore primary and backup. They are all

active.

You just have fsmo roles that are only on one DC at a time, but you can live

some times without FSMO roles.

Hello Sue,

You have to run both DC's always and connected always, so that they can replicate

the Active directory. Since W2000 there is no longer the PDC/BDC concept.

They are all Domain controllers, the difference are the 5 FSMO roles. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801

To get failover, make both DC's DNS server with active directory integrated

zones and Global catalog server. Also configure the clients to use both servers

as DNS server.

Global Catalog:

Open Active directory site and services, go to Sites, default first site

name, servers, choose the server, right click NTDS settings, open properties

and checkmark Global catalog (check event viewer after it, in Directory service

you must find event id 1110 and 1119)

Best regards

Re: domain controller prevent failure?

There is no such thing as a BDC in Win 2k3. All DCs operate in multimaster

mode except for the 5 FSMO roles.

Do you have any training on Active directory?
