S.london You can always be boring, and use SERVER01 SERVER02 SERVER03 Or some variant. If the company is Amalgamated Toothpick International, you might use ATIS001 ATIS002 (workstations being ATIW001, ATIW002, etc). I personally dislike cutesey-poo server names.

S.london As long as you follow the naming conventions in the article suppied by Meinolf you can name them as you please. Give them names that are easy for you and your users to remember and that makes it easy for you to identify them. You can name them by location; HeadOffice, Toronto, Houston, Tokyo, BackOffice, FrontOffice, AcrossTown... John

Guest Ryan Hanisco Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 RE: What do you call you Servers?? - Any recommend naming convention? The names and places thing was popular in the early 90's and is still there as a vestigial convention in a lot of universities and government organizations. As you have seen from some of the other postings, more utilitarian schemes have generally won out. I generally work in more distributed environments so I'll use: <Location>-<Function><Count> CHI-DC01 Chicago Domain Controller 01 CHI-SBS03 Chicago SBS Server 03 ITA-SQL02 Italy SQL 02 ITA-vSQL01 Italy Virtual SQL Cluster Node 01 It works for me though I don't get to tell people that TheRedQueen crashed or that I have to reboot Chervil... A little less fun. -- Ryan Hanisco MCSE, MCTS: SQL 2005, Project+ http://www.techsterity.com Chicago, IL Remember: Marking helpful answers helps everyone find the info they need quickly.
