Hi all.

How about Windows 2003 NTbackup reliability?

I'm using it with a HP Ultrium tape: is this solution a good and

reliable solution?

Thanks to all, bye.

Yes, it is a reliable solution. Whether it is a good solution

depends on your requirements: Does it meet all of them?

Is it sufficiently easy for you to use? Is it intuitive? Is it

flexible?

If you want a reliable backup solution then you must perform

a test restore right now and another one twice each year. This

goes in particular for a system restore. Assume that your hard

disk has crashed, get yourself a spare disk, then perform a

full restore. Many administrators don't bother with this type

of test. They are in for a nasty surprise when the crunch comes.

Thank you Pegasus, and excuse me for the delay of my answer!

In your opinion what are the problems of this solution?

Only lack of ease and flexibility?

But are my backupped files protected usig these two products (ultrium

+ windows ntbackup)?

Thanks again for your kind help.

Bye, Rosgiof.

Sorry, I have never used an Ultrium backup device. These days

I use tapes and ntbackup.exe only for data backup. I prefer

more flexible tools when it comes to backing up my system

partitions. I urge you to perform a full restoration based on

the ntbackup tool, to see what I mean.

Thanks very much, Pegasus, for your reply.

I understand perfectly the matter, so I would like to learn from you

two things:

- only for data backups (PDF, autocad drawing, word/excel documents,

etc.), is windows ntbackup a professional and reliable solution?

- what tools do you use to backup your system partitions? I need

absolutely a reliable utility that backups the operating system

(windows 2003 server) of my new server...

Thanks again for your patience and help.

Bye, Rosgiof.

*** Yes, it is reliable and yes, many professionals use it.

> - what tools do you use to backup your system partitions? I need

> (windows 2003 server) of my new server...

*** I use several tools:

*** a) regback.exe to back up my servers' registry once every week.

This allows me to restore the registry very quickly in case of

operator error, malfunction or registry corruption, even when

Windows will no longer start.

*** b) ntbackup.exe (back up the System State to a file). This lets

me restore the System State in those cases where Windows

is still running but something is wrong.

*** c) Acronis TrueImage. I create a new image twice each year.

Having this image lets me quickly restore the system partition,

even if the disk is corrupted.

*** It is essential that you perform a test recovery while things are

*** going well. Many administrators don't bother until they have

*** to deal with a major disaster.
