Windows 2003 Network with Odd DHCP Issue

Hi All,

here is one that has baffled me for weeks....

We have a Windows 2003 network running AD

2 DCs both running DNS and WINS and one running DHCP

There is over 70 clients all windows xp service pack2 a vast mix of dell and

hp hardware with 3com and broadcom network cards

now....

only about 12 clients on the network expierence this problem...

when we set them to dhcp, they work for about 10minutes all ok then the

machines start to grind to a halt and i mean its almost impossible to do

anything to them. we set them to static ip and they all work excellent.

very strange...

what i have done so far ...

1. move the dhcp server from one node to another -- didnt resolve the issue

2. updated the driver and firmware of each nic -- didnt resolve the issue

3. apply latest updates to windows xp -- didnt resolve the issue

4. reinstall the nic -- didnt resolve the issue

5. set the port speed on the switch to 100Mb/s half duplex -- didnt resolve

the issue

6. change the port the client was plugged in on -- didnt resolve the issue

7. upgrade the firmware on the switches -- didnt resolve the issue

8. installed network monitor software -- didnt find the problem

can anybody suggest what else to try or where to look

thanks in advance

Posting the result of ipconfig /all may help.

RE: Windows 2003 Network with Odd DHCP Issue

Hi John.

Just a thought, and i know you said that their are many different pcs, but

have you tried installing a new network card into even 1 pc? My thoughts on

this are maybe something somwhere on the network is binding its self to the

mac address on the nic somewhere!

Have you checked restore points on xp,maybe their was some update done?

Have you tried connecting them to their own network, as in, maybe put them

on a separate switch and issue dhcp from a spare device you would have and

see if they hang then.

Give them a false gateway so they dont get access to the inet.

If you set them to a static which would be the same as the dhcp address what

happens?

Sure as you know your self incompetent people say ah give it a static thatll

fix it :) hee hee

Have you tried doing a repair on the winsock and tcp stack.

Try setting them to dhcp and giving them a false gateway. Set the dns to a

public one while on dhcp.

Do they hang while opening any apps which may pull info from server. Or do

you just have to sit back and do nothing and see it happen?

Chat later john

RE: Windows 2003 Network with Odd DHCP Issue

Just another thing john,

Are their any other protocols being used on the nic?

Would it be possible for you to move the dhcp server to another box easily

enough?

When did this exatly happen? Because i know, some update was released around

the 10/11th this month, and i had really weird issues on my own pc and i got

called out to a site for connectivity issues. I forgot to say that to you

yesterday. Maybe try a system restore. Might be worth a long shot before

pulling it apart anymore.

Have you checked the lights on the switch. Are they going like 90 when its

on DHCP. how many bites are being sent and recieved. Are they quiet high?

maybe a possible trojan?

How long does it take for them to be assigned an ip address via dhcp. Longer

than the others or the same?

Tried any bios updates? chipset updates etc?

how about safemode with networking?

As per my above post try repairing the winsock and tcp stack.
