Guest FF Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Anyone know if you have 2-4 processors if you can exceed the 4gig RAM limit? What I'm wondering is, does the limit apply per processor. We're looking to possibly setup some VMWare on a server with 4 processors and 4 gig of RAM. We're wondering if it would make sense to toss in 8 gig of RAM before we buy more windows licenses. Thanks!
Guest Raptor Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Re: 32bit processor and 4 gig limit I don't believe you can. The 4GB limitation is that of the addressing, and addressing is done without any consideration of the physical processor. So you could add as many processors as you like, but it will not help you with the RAM limitation. Guest John John Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Re: 32bit processor and 4 gig limit You need Server 2003 Enterprise or better to make use of more than 4GB RAM. Use Windows Server 2003 64-bit as your host OS. From what I can tell VMWare puts each VM into a separate process, and if your typical guest OS in the VM is a 32-bit OS with less than 4GB of RAM, that runs really well. We do this now and I've seen no ill side effects from running Windows 2003 64-bit as the host for VMWare. -- Will
Guest Ryan Hanisco Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 RE: 32bit processor and 4 gig limit Hi FF, If you are running the x32 version of windows Server 2003, you can use more than 4 GB of RAMif you are running the Enterprise or Datacenter editions of the OS. Have a look at the Hardware Specification of the Server 2003 version comparison matrix: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/evaluate/features/compare.mspx Hope this works for you -- You'll also want to look at the /PAE switch on boot as well. -- Ryan Hanisco MCSE, MCTS: SQL 2005, Project+ http://www.techsterity.com Chicago, IL Remember: Marking helpful answers helps everyone find the info they need quickly.
