Printers not clearing out

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We have a problem that when a user logs out from the terminal server the

printers associated to their sessions don't delete. The only way we have

discovered to remove the printer is to restart the printer spooler services

on the TS.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong or what can be done to fix?

Thanks,

Joe

Hi Joe,

The problem you are experiencing, does this behaviour occur with all

of your printers? What printers do you use? Microsoft terminal

services is quite picky on its printerdrivers. Best way to find out if

the printerdriver is at fault here is to delete the printer on the

local system and add it with the new hardware wizard using either the

built in drivers or WHQL drivers provided by the manufacturer.

The following lists the type of printer drivers that can be used on a

Windows Terminal Server, in order of preference from most preferred to

not preferred

Windows Built-in PCL or PS Drivers - Version "Windows 2000, Windows XP

and Windows Server 2003"

WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) Signed Drivers - include the

"Designed for Windows" Logo"

PCL or PS Drivers - certified (by the Manufacturer) for use on Windows

Terminal Services or Citrix

Windows Built-in PCL6 Drivers - Version "Windows 2000, Windows XP and

Windows Server 2003"

Manufacturer's PCL or PS Drivers - Version "Windows 2000, Windows XP

and Windows Server 2003"

Manufacturer's PCL6 - Version "Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows

Server 2003"

Manufacturer's PCL or PS Kernel Mode Drivers - Version NT4

Hi Oscar,

There are three printer devices concerned. Two are HP LJ P2014 and the

other is a HP LJ 1022n.

The drivers installed on all the PCs and the terminal server are the same

and they are Manufacturers PCL version 2000, XP and 2003.

I've spent the last hour cleaning up the printers on the clients so I'm

going to start testing again.

Thanks,

Joe

Hi Joe,

These printers, are they connected with USB to the clients or are they

networked printers?

Re: Printers not clearing out

Hi Joe,

Which driver are you using for the 1022N? According

to HP's chart (and direct observations by another poster)

you need to use the LaserJet 6L driver included with 2003.

HP printers supported in Citrix Presentation Server environments

http://h71028.www7.hp.com/ERC/downloads/4AA0-8465ENW.pdf

I just helped another person who had issues with the P2014

and my conclusion was that it is *not* TS compatible. Most

of the text below came from my previous response.

These two printers (P2014/1022N) are host based, and as such

are not good TS printers (unless you are using a 3rd party

universal printer driver solution). They will use much more CPU

and bandwidth for each print job when compared to a printer

that has the native ability to understand & process PCL or PS.

Another down side of host based printers is that you do not

have the flexibility to map to a more basic driver like the HP

LaserJet 4. Mapping to a basic driver is a common technique

if the manufacturer-supplied driver is not TS compatible. The

basic drivers often produce smaller print jobs as well and are

fine for many business document needs.

I did a quick test for you to illustrate what I mean. I opened a

43KB text file in notepad, and printed it to the P2014 host

based driver. The document was 12 pages.

The amount of print data that downloaded to my workstation

was 1,487KB!! In addition, CPU usage on the TS was heavy

during the entire time the print job was downloading to the client.

Next I printed the same file from Notepad to an HP P2015

PCL 5 driver (Similar to P2014, *not* host based).

The amount of print data that downloaded to my workstation

was only 128KB!! There was a brief spike in CPU usage while

the 12 pages were spooled from notepad, but then it went

back to 0% afterwards.

If you have several users printing on your TS, using a host

based printer could quickly bring the server to a crawl because

of the CPU and/or bandwidth used.

The above test was relatively basic. Real world printing will

involve multiple fonts, colors, some graphics, which will amplify

the problem.

NOTE: When I ran the test with the P2014 I noticed strange

behavior. After the notepad print job completed downloading

I noticed many "phantom" print jobs accumulating in my local

print queue. In just 30 seconds I had over 100 jobs sitting there.

When I attempted to log off of the server it took several

minutes, hanging on "Executing C:\WINDOWS\system32\wlnotify.dll".

Normally logoffs are instant. I have extended messages enabled

on this test server or else I would not have known where in the

logoff process it was hanging.

Based on my own direct observations and your description of

problems I would say that the P2014 driver is not TS compatible.

Hi,

The P2014 are connected though USB and it is these printers that are causing

the problem. I too am coming to the conclusion that they are not compatible

too.

For the 1022n, for which I get hit and miss results, (some clients don't

carry printer into TS session, others do and work fine), i've been using the

HP LJ 1022 Win2003 driver dated 20070518.

I'll try the HP LJ 6L driver. Should I use this on just the TS or on the

client PCs too?

Hi,

I've got the 6L driver working fine now, except two clients still won't

carry the printer into the TS session.

Any ideas as to why?

Re: Printers not clearing out

For the 1022n, use the 6L on the workstations as well as

the server--in fact, if you use 6L on the workstations the

server will load the 6L driver automatically.

My recommendation would be to *not* use either printer

(unless you purchase a UPD solution) if you can help it. I

realize this might not be possible. Using just the 1022 might

be okay if the print volume is not too high.

Re: Printers not clearing out

Hi Joe,

Make sure you are using the Remote Desktop Client version

that came with your 2003 server on each workstation. The

install file is located on your server's hard drive here:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\clients\tsclient\win32\msrdpcli.msi

The above version will pick up usb printers, performs better,

and is more stable than the newest version.

TP,

I've got the clients all working fine now with the 6L driver but every new

session starts with the paper size set to Letter under device settings.

Everything I've tried so far won't set the default to A4.

Can you help?

Please ignore last post. It's now working. Installed local HPLJ6 on TS and

set default size there.
