shrimply Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Hi, bit of an interesting one here, at least I think it is. A long time back before I found a easier solution I was trying to get the default translucent blue folder icon back for my music folder. Most people who have vista know they have a habit of changing back to regular folder icons. Now I can't remember exactly what I did but at some point I created a file named Music2. I then deleted it. Fine? No. This folder has a habit of reappearing randomly empty apart from the sample music folder, sometimes its obvious why it happens, like If I save a new playlist it saves in the playlist folder it creates in this location. But I'm at a lost as to why. There is no mention of it in the registry under shell folders but I really have no idea what I'm doing that was just a thought. SO any help appreciated. RandyL Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 It sounds to me like that is the default "Music" folder and that you only managed to rename it to "Music2". Even if you later deleted the folder it is being recreated when called upon. Keep in mind that in Vista the "Music" folder is not a sub folder of "Documents" like it used to be. It has it's own directory under C:\Users\UserName So if your current "Music" folder is in "Documents" then it is just a folder you created and not the default Vista one. As such applications like a playlist or the samples will use the default one. If you have not deleted it again it should show up in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders If I were you I would check to see if the path of "Music2" is indeed C:\Users\UserName and then transfer all your files into that directory. Followed by renaming it to "Music". You can change the location but a simpler solution to accessing the folder from Documents is to just create a shortcut there. shrimply Posted December 7, 2008 Author Posted December 7, 2008 Hi I Restarted the computer and still it is not showing up in the shell folders as you can see Do you think that moving my music files into Music2 and renaming it would solve the problem anyway? If nothing else I suppose its worth a go. Quote Keeping Snakes Tips, Advice and info on keeping SnakesClick Here"If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room"
RandyL Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 As I said I think it might shrimply. Just don't delete your music files until you are sure. We wouldn't want you to lose those now would we. Guest Wolfeymole Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 And sack all that christmasy icon crap too shrimps. Quote
shrimply Posted December 7, 2008 Author Posted December 7, 2008 Why? Without being rude as far as I'm aware it has nothing to do with this problem, I've not done anything to change the folder icons, Only tried to get back vistas default folders, I now have the desktop.ini files for each folder so getting back the translucent blue folders is easy. Since the only christmas icons I've edited are the shortcuts on my desktop I don't see what the problem is. Is there an issue with using self created shortcuts? When your stuck studying instead of enjoying yourself during december having a slightly festive desktop helps keep your spirits up. Of course I hate to disagree with you as you constantly give me good advice but I'd like some more explanation as what you think is wrong with this issue. Once I copied the files from music to music2 it renamed itself music, so that would appear to have solved the issue, many thanks. RandyL Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Sorry shrimply. I'm not in the normal Vista view at the moment. My mistake. I'll see what I can find or figure out. Just out of curiosity do you have the Navigation Pane enabled? It's usually located at the left side of your screen. Quote We are all members helping other members. RandyL Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 That's ok for now. When you click on properties you should see some tabs at the top. One of which should say "Location". I understand you say you don't see much there but by any chance do you see that? Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. RandyL Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Well that is not good at all. Short of re-installing Windows a reg fix may be needed. I have been looking into this. First of all I would double backup the registry. Create a restore point. That is one way. Open regedit and click on the upper most hive to highlite it. Computer would be the safest. Click file>export and save it to the desktop for a location. Make sure it has a name and a .reg extenstion even if you have to add it. You should now have two backup possibilities. shrimply Posted December 10, 2008 Author Posted December 10, 2008 Hi Have done both, been doing a bit of looking myself. Been looking here, Personal User Folder - Restore Missing Folder - Page 4 - Vista Forums But so far had no luck, I completely deleted the music folder and made sure the registry entry was correct but so far it just does not want to reapear. shrimply Posted December 10, 2008 Author Posted December 10, 2008 No wait I tried the Shell:My Music command yet again and it actually found something, and my music folder is back and working. Now presuming Music2 decides never to reappear it might actually be sorted. I'll keep you updated and many thanks for the help. shrimply Posted December 11, 2008 Author Posted December 11, 2008 No Music2 is back to reappearing, I really don't understand why. Its not set as the shell folder. Shell:My Music brings up the right folder and the right folder is shownin the registry and yet Music2 reappears on most restarts. This is annoying me but I'm not prepared to do a reinstall to fix it that seems a bit OTT for such a little problem I'll just put up with it if there isn't another option. RandyL Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 OK so the Music link points to the right place again. The registry shows it correct too. So that part is fixed again. Unforunately you are back to square one with this second music folder reappearing again. Does the properties work in both folders? What is in both folders? It seems something is calling this folder back. It could be a backup program you have or some other third party program that deals with music. At this point I suspect the latter but I have no idea what that might be. Maybe someone else has an idea. Quote We are all members helping other members. shrimply Posted December 12, 2008 Author Posted December 12, 2008 hmm, properties work in both folders but there is nothing particularly spectacular in there. Music2 always reappears with an empty folder in it "Christmas music" which I also have in the correct music folder but with files in it. The other music folder contains well music ,lol again nothing unusual. I have no back up software running or third party music software that I run regularly except VLC player. But it does usually reappear at start-up and windows media centre runs at start-up so it can always keep the TV times up to date, could it be this? Thanks for the help Quote Keeping Snakes Tips, Advice and info on keeping SnakesClick Here"If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room"
shrimply Posted December 12, 2008 Author Posted December 12, 2008 I think we may be getting there, lol. Both Windows media center and media player are causing it, whenever i open them it reappears. lol how I solve this I don't know. shrimply Posted December 12, 2008 Author Posted December 12, 2008 I think it may be solved, I really hope so. But a quick googl search revealed a possible solution. Music2/Christmas Music was for some reason set as the default rip folder for Media player, and I presume media center is linked. Anyway it isn't reappearing anymore when either is opened so I'll see what happens on reboot. Dalo Harkin Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Let us know how you get on mate - Media player is aweful in my opinion and I myself have had issues. I have a 360 in the front room and I stream media and music from my server to it via media player -once the files are set up as in the loactions on the 360 if you ever insert a new file or music then what happens is the name stays the same - even if you rename it on the server and thats because it will not register the change - Nor will media centre, but the server will. It is very odd - but like you say its searching for a default file and when it cannot find it - its reverting the older one.
