Hi there,

I have recently had my old windows XP professional computer re-vamped, and it now has 2GB of RAM, and a new motherboard etc etc etc.

Everything was fine after the new instalations, but the third time i used it once these changes had been made, the welcome screen does not appear.

Bios loads, windows loads, and then when i expect the welcome screen to appear.....nothing happens, i get a mouse on the screen but that's just about it. I think windows is not used to the new hardware updates or something.

Please let me know your opinions,

jamesbrown

Hi James,

From the description in your post it seems like your system doesn't start up correctly - ie gets so far and gets stuck - is that right?

If that is right, try prsssing F8 whilst starting, to get into Safe Mode.

If that works, I would assume it is one of your startup programs that is causing grief.

Have you installed any software since the rebuild?

safemode

no i don't think so, but i did go on holiday after the rebuild, so i only used it once or twice before leaving it a while, and when i got back it just wouldn't load the welcome screen, just black black black.

I will try safe mode and if that doesn't work, i will reset the bios, and if that doesn't work then i will have to buy a IDE/SATA to USB 2.0 and get all my data off the hard drive, and then reinstall windows.

The other option would be to buy a new hardrive (i need a new one anyway and it wasn't upgraded in the rebuild) and set that as primary (which i don't know how to do) and then install windows on it., then have my old hard drive plugged in as secondary and just copy the data across.

UPDATE:::::::::

i tryed safemode and that didn't even load so i loaded system from last settings that worked, that didn't work so i removed all USBs plugged in, this included keyboard, mouse and speakers. System then said it needed to check disks for consistancy, let it do that, said it found some error file, removed it, recovered orphaned file and rebooted. Now everything is absolutly fine!!!!! I'm so happy because i haven't got round to fixing this problem before nearly half a year!!!! It's like saying hi to an old friend :)

An upgraded system, which has not been used a great deal shouldn't have the problems you describe.

I think your first port of call is with the person that upgraded it for you. There maybe a hardware incompatibility, a BIOS setting that needs changing or a driver that needs updating.

Or there may be a fault.

If you go ahead and install a new hard drive, and you have an up to date board, you will have a choice of SATA or IDE drives.

IDE will install more easily, SATA will give you more performance.

Master/slave is set using a jumper on the drive - or if you set both drives to CS - cable select, your master drive would connect to the end of the cable, your slave to the middle connector.

Connect the 1 drive (master) whilst installing to avoid choosing the wrong one!

SATA drives don't have master/slave configs, there are all equal.

Let us know how you get on

If the MOBO was changed the OS would HAVE to have been reloaded, chances are that they have set it up incorrectly or not installed the latest Service packs.

From memory SP1 didnt have a password log in screen - that was introduced in SP2 (don't quote me :D)

Ask them if they installed the MOBO drivers and the latest Service packs and let us know.
