IP ADDRESS?

Can somebody please explain to me what an IP address actually is? i have a piczo site and i have noticed it shows me as having 2 different IP addresses, but i am using the same computer.How do you know somebody's actual IP address?Many thanks, i know i can rely on you..:D

Well, it seems you have a dynamic IP address. Did you reboot the router / modem before you logged into the site again as some ISPs assign a different IP address after the procedure? Are you using any proxy?

Janice's IP is static Goku, although it does appear to be on a proxy on occasion.

Thanks for that Wolfy i don't understand a word of that, lol...what i would like to know is, is there anyway i can tell if messages left on my site come from the same computer....thanks again..:D

I thought so. But since, she stated that she gets two different IP addresses on the same computer, I thought it might be due to a dynamic IP address. Thanks for clearing it. :)

 

As for your question Janice, from what I gather (from here) there should be a button to view the IP address of the commentator. Check the IP addresses of all the comments and tally them. If any two of them are same, they are coming from the same computer / network. If not, then they are probably coming from different connections.

 

However, I must point out that the technique is not completely fool proof. There are ways to bypass such tests so use your judgment wisely. Oh, and you can't ban or restrict an IP address on Piczo.

Your modem or router will be given an IP address by your internet service provider.

 

This is so it can be identified on the internet - compare it to your address/postcode of your house.

 

Some internet providers give you the same one each time your modem/router connects to the internet - most don't, especially true for home internet users.

 

I don't think you can rely on an IP address to tell who is coming and going on your site.

 

The actual computer(s) connected to the internet cannot be identified easily as the all the internet sees is your router or modem.

 

That's a general view, and there are lots of 'if and buts' that are really boring :)

Thanks for that Goku,Wolfy and Tootech, but as an example, how do mods on a site like this know when a post is from the same person? ie a banned member...i'm only asking this as i'm on another forum and i'm getting a few undesirable remarks and i think there should be a way to find out where this is coming from..Fair play to the site owner they are doing ALL they can to stop this.

Have you reported this behaviour to the site owner Janice?

 

Without going into detail we have security measures in place to determine just who is who.

yes she has reported this to the site owner who said he had banned their IP addresses but said it wouldn't actually stop them though. The site/forum is also a vBulletin site so thought there might have been a way to do what you guys do.

If he had banned the IP address of the user concerned then that user would not be allowed access to the site whatsoever.

 

However the user could use a proxy IP address to circumvent this.

 

This would be noticeable to any site owner or administrator online at that time.
