Hi, Im hoping someone could help with a problem ive been trying to find an answer for, for ages.

My HP laptop is running vista at the moment, and im trying to find my xbox. Also in the house theirs a main home computer and a spare laptop. Within the network and sharing center on my hp laptop, it allows sharing and it states a public network. However when i try to locate other devices on the network, it shows nothing. Im annoyed because the spare laptop, which is running xp, can find the home computer and xbox, but not my HP. All computers are wireless. So the question im asking is whats the problem? Ive removed the firewall like many sites have stated, but still no luck. My pc cant be found or find other computers. How do i make my pc visible and able to find other computers? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,Kieron

I'll just add that when I did this a while ago, this didn't work on SP3. I found an unofficial release somewhere though so you may have to do some googeling.

thanks for your help so far, but that link didnt seem to work. Could it be something to do with my HP's ip address?(i dont know what ip addresses are!) Just been searing again everywhere for a solution. Anyway a few more bits on info. Ive gone into ipconfig/all and retreived the following

HP Vista laptop) IPV4 ADDRESS: 192.168.1.5(PREFFERED)

XP laptop) IP ADDRESS: 192.168.1.4

However both pc's defualt gateway and subnet mask etc are the same 198.168.1.1.

Is there anything that i should look for within these screens that will show a problem?

also the connection specific dns suffix for both computers is different. Is that okay?

Any help is really appreciated, Thanks,Kieron

Hi,

Thanks for all the info, can you explain a little further "but that link didnt seem to work"

Do you mean you couldn't download the fix? Which link do you mean - the SP2 or SP3?

I've checked them both, and they are fine - the SP3 link is slightly different and you need to give an email address for verification purposes.

Your IP addresses are fine, as is your Default Gateway information.

All your pc's will have a different IP - it's just to identify each one. The gateway is the same - that is the point where your computers need to go to get on the Internet. It's actually the IP of your router. Subnet Mask should be 255.255.255.0 on all pc's, and looking at the other info you have, I'm pretty sure it will be.

You do need the Microsoft update detailed, Vista and XP won't talk on your network without it.

One more thing - If you look on your Vista PC, go to the Network and Sharing Center, look down to Sharing & Discovery, and to Password Protected Sharing - make sure it is switched off.

sorry, i wasnt really maing myself clear.

I went to that second link you posted and did as you stated.

(click the link and fill in the info to get at the download)

I did this on both computers as wasnt sure which i was supposed to do it on. I got the link sent to my e-mail then opened it up and ran the program or zip. Then after entering the password, i think it stated something like all files exported, or maybe even stated complete. Anyway after that i assumed i was just supposed to leave it. I really dont know what SP2 or SP3 is tbh, so im a bit lost there. I think i may just give up soon. Thanks, for all the help though. Il keep trying to find an answer before i throw my laptop at my xbox!! Haha

p.s

If you look on your Vista PC, go to the Network and Sharing Center, look down to Sharing & Discovery, and to Password Protected Sharing - make sure it is switched off.

Already done, still no luck

If you havn't trashed your Xbox yet, lets have another look.

Lets find out what Service Packs your XP machines are running.

On each XP machine do this

Click the Start button, then over to Run, type in 'msinfo32' then press Enter....like this

Have a look at the piccy below, and the underlined info is tells you the current Service Pack that is installed

Just to say thanks for all your help Tootech! Took the laptop to get looked at and had to have a rebuild. Realised every windows update since march had failed! Thats where the fault was! Cheers for your help though

Has that fixed the problem though? as your XP machine might still need that update to let it see the other machines etc,

Let us know if your problems are fixed or not,

Thanks.
