Guest Mitchell B. Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 I have a disc that Disk Defragmenter won't finish defragging. On the first pass it did considerable work but quit with 22% fragmentation left. Now when I hit defragment it runs for 30 seconds and spits out the report below. Nothing in the logs to indicate a error. Disc is NOT dirty. No 3rd party disk tools have been installed. Partition has 54% free space. Any ideas why defragmentor won't finish? Cheers, Mitch Report: Volume (C:) Volume size = 99.99 GB Cluster size = 4 KB Used space = 45.38 GB Free space = 54.61 GB Percent free space = 54 % Volume fragmentation Total fragmentation = 22 % File fragmentation = 45 % Free space fragmentation = 0 % File fragmentation Total files = 62,368 Average file size = 1,024 KB Total fragmented files = 4 Total excess fragments = 105 Average fragments per file = 1.00 Pagefile fragmentation Pagefile size = 3.91 GB Total fragments = 2 Folder fragmentation Total folders = 11,430 Fragmented folders = 1 Excess folder fragments = 0 Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation Total MFT size = 91 MB MFT record count = 73,921 Percent MFT in use = 79 % Total MFT fragments = 2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fragments File Size Files that cannot be defragmented 20 1 MB \WINDOWS\system32\config\AppEvent.Evt 28 2 MB \WINDOWS\system32\config\SecEvent.Evt 59 4 MB \WINDOWS\system32\config\SysEvent.Evt

Hello, It can't defrag pagefile and files opened in exclusive acces, like the eventlogs mentionned. You may use pagedefrag to defrag them on next boot: http://www.microsoft.com/france/technet/sysinternals/fileanddisk/pagedefrag.mspx -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com French blog: http://www.lotp.fr "Mitchell B." <Mitchell B.@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:83244773-BFBE-4BC8-97AA-93E77B8994BD@microsoft.com... >I have a disc that Disk Defragmenter won't finish defragging. > > On the first pass it did considerable work but quit with 22% fragmentation > left. Guest Mitchell B. Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Re: Defrag refuses to defrag disk. That did do some house work but fragmentation is still at 22/45%. Anything else I can try? While it may appeal to your aesthetic sense to have all files on your machine completely contiguous, having fragmented event viewer files will not measurably affect the performance of your machine. It is very likely that you have already spent far more time dealing with this issue than you will ever recoup because the machine might run a smidgeon faster. If you really insist on having contiguous event logger files then you could clear the event log. You could also do this: - boot the machine with a Bart PE boot CD - copy the three files to a different location - delete the originals - restore the three files You will spend a lot of time in doing this, you will end up with a very useful tool (the Bart PE CD) but your machine won't run any faster.
Guest Mitchell B. Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Re: Defrag refuses to defrag disk. Thanks for the repsonse Pegasus, The PageDefrag app mentioned earlier sorted those 3 files out, but they weren't what I was concerned about. Its the 45% file fragmentation of the 45GB of used space on the disk. If it was a few percentage points I'd agree with you. The fragmented files statistically have to include the (3) 10GB SQL Server database files running on the system. Are there any inherent problems with degragging these files? Their size maybe? Defrags were run in safe mode so SQL Server shouldn't have been running so they wouldn't have been locked. Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Guest Mitchell B. Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Re: Defrag refuses to defrag disk. Thanks for the help. The contig.exe tool on the link provided previously sorted me out. cheers again, Mitch "Mitchell B." wrote: > > Thanks for the repsonse Pegasus, > > The PageDefrag app mentioned earlier sorted those 3 files out, but they > weren't what I was concerned about.
