I had a Windows Security Alert informing me that Automatic Updates had been turned off - don't know how

I followed the instructions to enable the updates by going into Computer Management but when I attempt to change the Startup type from Disable to Automatic I get Error 1058 The service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it

Please help, pretty please, it's been driving me round the bend.

Hello Jules, it seems that the Automatic Updates service has been disabled on your computer.

Please perform the following steps and see if they help or not.

1. Click Start.

2. Select Run....

3. Type services.msc in the Open: box and click OK.

4. In the corresponding Window, you will be presented with a list of services as shown below. Search for a service titled Background Intelligence Transfer Service or something similar.

5. After you have located the service, right-click on it and select Properties.

6. In the Startup type: change the preference to Automatic.

7. Click Apply and then OK.

8. Reboot the computer.

Try to enable the Automatic Updates now and see if you still experience the problem or not. Good Luck. :)

Hi Goku,

I had tried that previously but... I don't give up easily. This morning I turned the pc on and an alert came up that 2 potentially harmful programs had been found, I cleaned and restarted about 3 times and lo and behold I was able to turn Automatic Updates on. I went into Services to double check and it was how it should be.

Thanks for your help :)
