Jamey Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 If you are sick of being stuck with Windows, I personally recommend you try Ubuntu Linux. It is completely free, well-supported and fast. I use it daily for all of my needs: word processing, web surfing, emailing, burnings CDs and so on. If you are a gamer, however, you will still need Windows to play those 3D 'blockbuster' type games, simply because game developers don't make games for anything but Windows these days. Ubuntu is great because it can't get adware, spyware, viruses, trojans, dialers, popups, worms and so on, it's completely immune. It is also far more secure, stable, fast and ethical than any version of Microsoft Windows ever released. It works on the same computers as Windows does and really does feel like a 'breath of fresh air'. I absolutely adore it, and I truely believe even the most Windows-loving geeks should give it a go. :D Quote
Guest imported_Mike Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Darn right Jamey, Ubuntu rocks. I gave one of the FREE CD'S to the college Technician and he has started using it. Hopefully he will put it all around college. I ordered 30 more the other week, just hope customs don’t get hold of them :) Give it a go if you haven’t already, and you don’t need to format your pc or have a spare one lying around.. You can just use the Ubuntu Live CD which runs Ubuntu off the CD Rom :P Mike x Quote
Jamey Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 Maybe he could try out Edubuntu, looks really promising for schools, colleges and universities. I've got 60 disc sets of the current version and 30 of the old version still! :P Quote
kthdsn Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I recommend it too, I use ubuntu on my laptop and although I had to change some sound configuration thingies it works very well. I use it for general surfing/officy things as well as a server. It handles both better than windows ever did. Its great, everyone should use it, or at least give it a try :D Quote
jpagel Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Will Quickbooks run on it? Can you burn DVD's as well?? Quote
andyhargreaves Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I'd recommend it here too. Great package and community support. Ubuntu has what is so often lacking in the GNU/Linux workd - it just works - you don't have to mess about with it if you don't want to. Andy Quote
Guest imported_Mike Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 jpagel, Quickbooks wont run on it, but you can get around it. You can download and install some free software which allows you to have another virtual OS. eg, Windows, and install Quickbooks on windows whilst running Ubuntu. There is built in software to burn cds/dvds :D Mike Quote
Jamey Posted January 22, 2006 Author Posted January 22, 2006 jpagel, The Linux equivalent of Quickbooks is GnuCash. To be able to add it via the Synaptic Package Manager, you will need to add the universe repository. Quote
PriceChild Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Thankyou soooo much for introducing me to ubuntu on the last forums. I now only rarely boot windows, ubuntu taking care of wireless, bluetooth, adsl usb modem and everything else. Games such as doom3 and quake 4 with their native installers run at twice the fps at very high quality settings... it even runs near perfect under "Ultra". I love the repository system making it so easy to find better software than its windows counterparts. GET UBUNTU NOWWWW!!! Quote
Jamey Posted January 22, 2006 Author Posted January 22, 2006 No problem, wow, what a success story! :D I hope this convinces some more people to at least have a go. It's definitely worth it! Quote
kthdsn Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 I use gnucash, its really easy to use and i prefer it to quicken (haven't used quickbooks before) because it has less annoying features noone ever uses and it just works nicely. Mind you so does everything else on ubuntu :) Quote

kthdsn Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Woohoo I converted someone this week, who in turn converted someone else. The only thing is now I've got to help both of them anytime they get stuck! Quote
PriceChild Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 My new 30 discs or so just arrived :) Already lent half a dozen out. I love the live disc option to linux :) makes it so easy to demo to people. Pricey Quote
