Well basically, when i go to shut down my computer it freezes when it gets to "Windows is shutting down", but it only freezes if my pc has been on for longer than around 30mins/hour.

When i go to shut down my computer using start, i get an error message about dumprep and something like "failed to intailize", which happens to quick i can't read it. This error started to appear when it started freezing.

I have tried disabling dumprep... i can't find it in both msconfig and regedit, but i disabled it through right click on my computer -> properties -> advanced -> Settings (startup and recovery -> and then under "Write debugging information i have selected none.

I am running Windows XP Media Centre Edtion 2005 and today i upgraded to SP3 to see if that stopped the freezing, but didn't make no difference.

So any help or tips to stop my computer from freezing would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks, Joe :)

Thank you Goku, for your quick response :)

I cannot see dumprep in the msconfig.

I cannot see dumprep in the registery editor either.

I checked under Ctrl + Alt + Delete -> Processes and i do not seem to have dumprep running.

Any further help welome, thanks. :D

OK Djaj. Time to try another shot at this.

Right-click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab | Under Startup and Recovery | Settings button | Under System Failure | UNCheck: Write an event to the system log | Under Write debugging information | Select (None) | Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK.

Right-click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab | Error Reporting button | Disable error reporting | Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK.

Click Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK | Scroll down to and double-click: Error Reporting Service | Click Stop button | Click Apply | Click OK.

Restart the computer after you have performed the above set of instructions. They should disable the error reporting feature in Windows XP and hopefully get rid of the error too. Let us know how it goes though. Good Luck. :)

Again thank you for you reply Goku.

But sadly this has had no effect on the error or the freezing :(

Do you have anything else i can try.. Thanks.

Do you have a Logitech mouse or any of the company's device? What Antivirus are you using? I have a strong suspicion that the two might be conflicting with each other resulting in the crash.

Also, please do the following and report back the results.

1. Click Start.

2. Select Run.

3. In the Open: box, type shutdown -t -0

4. Click OK.

Note: The above procedure will terminate all running processes resulting in an immediate shutdown. It is advised that you save all your important data and work before you proceed with the above instructions.

Provide me with the required information as soon as possible. Good Luck. :)

I tried both copy and pasting and typing "shutdown -t -0" into run, all that happened was a cmd box came up for a fraction of a section, and after that, nothing happened at all.

Yes i do have a Logitech mouse and keyboard. I have the Cordless Desktop EX110 http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard_mice_combos/devices/154&cl=US,EN

I also run AVG Free Anti-Virus.

I have had no problems with either, but since this error has started coming up.. AVG has always failed to update.. It says "Invalid Update Control CTF File". As can be seen in this screenshot:

ImageShack - Image Hosting :: avget6.jpg

Do you suggest i try shutting down without AVG running or re-install it or whatever.

Thnaks.

Without getting into the "guts" of your problem I would give up on AVG altogether an stick with either Avast or Avira. I have used all three and AVG is by far the worst.

Hello Djaj. I will reiterate Barry's advice and suggest that you remove AVG immediately and install Avira or Avast as a replacement. I just hope that it resolves the conflict and resolves your other problem too. In either case, please keep us posted on developments. :)

Thank you for the advice. I have now got rid of AVG and have replaced it with Avast, i am proud to say that i no longer recieve the dumprep error anymore, but my pc still freezes when it gets to "Windows is Shutting Down" and i have to turn it off at the plug.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?, Thanks.

Sorry i have seem to have been mistaken.. i still get the dumprep errors when i shutdown.

Also something else i found out was that if i shutdown my computer before it has been turned on for around 10minutes, it seems to actually shut down properly and not freeze, but if you shutdown after 10 minutes, it does freeze.

Answer to your question is that, yes i do.. i have a NVidia GeForce 7300SE and i have (i think) the latest drivers..

Thanks.

OK, here is one more thing you can try to resolve your problem.

1. Click Start.

2. Select Run....

3. Type services.msc in the Open: box and click OK.

4. In the corresponding Window, you will be presented with a list of services as shown below. Search for a service titled Nvidia Driver Helper Service or something similar.

5. After you have located the service, right-click on it and select Properties.

6. In the Startup type: change the preference from Automatic to Disabled. Click Apply and then OK.

7. Reboot the computer.

Try to shut down your computer and see if you still experience the problem or not. Good Luck. :)

I have done this and i think it has solved the problem.

I still get the dumprep error at shutdown but this doesn't bother me.. the fact that my computer doesn't freeze anymore at "Windows is Shutting Down" really pleases me.

Therefore i would wish to thank you for your help, wish you a merry christmas, and i would give a donation, but i am under 16 and therefore can't have a Paypal account. :(

Thanks for letting us know the status of the problem Djaj. I will try to look a solution for the dumprep.exe problem too but I am not very hopeful. As for the donations, your sincere thanks is a very gracious donation to me and the Forum, so cheer up. And try to visit us more here. :)

Please feel free to ask any more questions or doubts you may have.

Hey djaj8, can I just ask a quick question, when you try shut down or restart/reboot your system do you get the following notice:

"The application failed to initialize because the windows station is shutting down"?

When i shut down my computer again last night, it froze again.. So it is now happening around half of the time.

Dirtypolo, yes that is the message that i get when i shutdown.

ang suggestions? Thanks.

And am I correct in thinking you have disabled all error reporting and still have the steps that Goku advised in post #4 done?

so therefore it should not even be creating a dumprep.exe file if that is the case.

And can you still not find it by using any of the methods Goku asked you to try? ctrl+alt+del > Processes, or msconfig, etc?

Another thing, I would like you to do is start up msconfig again, and go on to the BOOT.INI tab, make sure the /BOOTLOG check box is ticked.

Then reboot/restart your system as normal and IF it freezes and you have to do a forced shut down please start back up into safe mode and navigate to %SystemRoot% folder (Possibly C:\WINDOWS) and open up the file named: Ntbtlog.txt

Then please post the last few lines of that file on a reply please.

Thanks

Speed Up Shutdown

OK Djaj, its time we venture into the registry to find a solution to your problem.

Please download the attached archives and extract them. If you are unsure on how to open the archive, use the instructions from here and continue. After you have extracted the archive, you should obtain two files labeled Quick Shutdown.reg and Disable Dr. Watson.reg. Double-click on one at one time file and you will be asked whether you want to import the information into the registry or not. Answer Yes to the prompt and sometime later another dialog box will pop up informing you that the operation was successful. Repeat the process for the other file. Reboot your computer.

Note: Please backup your registry before you apply any of the above changes so that we can revert back your system to working condition if something goes awry.

Try to shutdown the computer now? Is there any difference.

Let us know the results as soon as possible. :)

Is this what you wanted?

Thanks.

Hey djaj, if possible can you repeat the steps I asked for but remember to start back up in sfae mode by tapping f8 as starting up.

And then navigate to that file again and copy the last few lines again please. They should be different to the ones you have just posted.

Thanks.

Remember you only need to start up into safemode and copy those lines after it freezes on normal shutdown

So we are back to square one. I think it is a hardware problem if the above fixes were unable to resolve your problem.

1. Click Start.

2. Select Run....

3. Type services.msc in the Open: box and click OK.

4. In the corresponding Window, you will be presented with a list of services as shown below. Search for a service titled Event Log or something similar.

5. After you have located the service, right-click on it and select Properties.

6. In the Startup type: change the preference from Automatic to Disabled. Click Apply and then OK.

7. Reboot the computer.

Try to shut down your computer and see if you still experience the problem or not. Good Luck. :)
