terminal server sessions locking

Hi,

Have a customer with two servers, one a terminal server running MS windows

2003 server and one small business server running MS SBS 2003.

Terminal Server has SP2 loaded

The problem is at least once a day one of the sessions starts to lock up.

The users tell me they can tell when it's going to happen by the fact the

cursor changes to a black square. Sometime they can log off their session

and when they log back on it's all good. Other time the session need to be

reset from the management console.

The only errors in the log are "Application Hang" errors, but these don't

really correspond to the times the session hangs and also don't necessarily

apply to the user whos session has the problem.

There is only a small amout of programs on the server - Office 2007, Project

2007 and Adobe Acrobat. Also Timberline Accounting and Estimating.

Don't really know where to start but happy to get any suggestions.

Regards,

Brandon Hegh

Re: terminal server sessions locking

Does this happen to one session at a time, without interfering with

the other sessions, or does it happen to all active sessions

simultaneously?

Are all users on the same subnet as the TS, or connecting over a

WAN link?

Can you check in the EventLog if these "hangs" coincide with print

jobs being created on the server?

Re: terminal server sessions locking

It only happens to one session session at a time. There are some users who

have never seen this problem but I can't isolate any difference between them

and the users that get the problem. Different users connect using the WAN

or LAN depending on ther locations. It hasn't made a difference. There

does appear to be some link between the print jobs and the hangs. Althought

the errors aren't at the same time but within one or two minutes after the

application hang. Not all print jobs create problems. In fact very few

cause problems. It happens from different applications and different

printers and also different users.

Re: terminal server sessions locking

Uninstall any 3rd party printer drivers completely from the server.

Then map printers to native Windows printer drivers.
