Order the CD and then set your computer to boot first from the CD and

then follow the instructions.

Alias has given you information on replacing Windows with a popular

Linux version. Linux is a fine operating system and it may be exactly

what you want or need, don't be afraid to try it! You should be aware

however that your software will not run on Linux, if you have

applications or games that you like to use they will not run on Linux,

you will have to check with the software vendor to see if they have

Linux versions of your favorite software.

Linux is *not* Windows! You will need to be resourceful and you will

have to relearn the workings of your operating system. As for changing

Windows ME to a new up to date system, if you want to stay in the

Windows family of operating system you will have to buy an upgrade or

new version to replace what you have now, other than Vista there is no

place that you can download a replacement or upgrade for your computer.

I don't think that Vista would be a good replacement choice for an

older Me computer, hardware wise it is simply too demanding, most older

computers just don't have enough "juice" to run Vista properly and

upgrading these older computers to acceptable levels is usually not a

good investment. If you do want to stay in the Windows family of

operating system and keep the hardware you have now you should probably

upgrade to Windows XP.

Good luck;

John

Clearly the OP is a novice and I don't think that you are doing him or

her a favour by not telling them exactly what it is that they are

getting into! I think Linux is a good alternative to Windows for

certain users but in this case I think the OP may not fully understand

what he/she is getting into and I think that by not making that clear

you might unwittingly be misleading him. This is not meant as a slight

or an insult to the OP, but as shown by his/her last post, if he or she

cannot figure out how to do something as simple as downloading and

creating an installation package I doubt that they will be very

successful at running Linux!

Please note that I said to "order the CD". Installing Ubuntu is much

easier than installing any flavor of Windows.

The OP may also have problems with the installation of Linux, as I did with

my 'older system', not fullfilling the requirements of it, not necessarily

so, but possibly.

Therefore an upgrade to WinXP may be the 'better road to travel'.

Even better luck,

Harry.

Re: windows ME

Did you install and try it?

Removing operating systems is usually a two step process:

1- You dislodge the MBR boot loader code that calls the operating

system loader.

2- You format or remove the partition onto which the operating system

is installed.

If you decide to install a Windows operating system the Windows setup

program will do the above for you. Please be aware that if you format

or delete the partition you will lose all the files on the partition.

If you just want to wipe everything on the disk and install Windows just

boot with your Windows CD and follow the on screen instructions. If you

already have an existing Windows installation that you want to keep you

have to do steps 1 & 2 manually, if that is your case please post again

and someone will tell you how to proceed.
