Guest Woody140284 Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Hello, I am using Remote Desktops to connect to some of our servers. When i choose to log one off to log in again either under a new user or because of a change of password it often reboots the Server. I am certain that I have not chosen to Shut Down and this has now happened on a number of occasions. I was wondering if this was a known issue. If you need any more information just ask. Thanks Carl

There is a policy setting on Win2003 servers that prompts admins to enter a reason for a shutdown/reboot. It is set to "on" by default. I suspect that you have turned it off. Turn it back on again so that you can be sure you haven't selected the wrong button.

When it reboots, it looks as though it is logging off the current user but then just disconnects the session and reboots. There is not a chance to say why you are rebooting/ shutting down. There also appears to be nothing in the even logs to suggest any reason/ error that has forced the reboot.

I suggest you get someone to stand in front of the server the next few times you log off a remote desktop session, to watch what happens. Note that non-Microsoft machines can cause this sort of problem. I once battled with a server that would reboot spontaneously each time I typed this harmless command: net use Q: \\SomeServer\SomeShare but only if drive letter Q: was already mapped. After much searching I nailed this one to the virus scanner. What I' trying to say is: It is likely that you run some software that has a problem. Removing that software will solve your problem.
