Hi Dean

Welcome to FPCH

What are you trying to hook to the card?

Hi Wolfeymole,

I'm trying to back up my xbox 360 drive, I've been told the Via 6421 Sata pci card is the best option,

Hi Dean

Ok so we can be absolutely sure what's going on here can I just ask a couple of things.

When you say Back up the drive do you mean back up accumulated Save Points?

I ask as I'm unsure when it comes to game consoles.

When I had a PS1 there were about 12 save points that I could use and once they were full I would have to delete one or more to make new saves, does this apply to 360's?

If your wishing to save all save points to the PC then that's a great idea.

Please get back to us with more info.

I believe he means actually back it up as an xbox 360 has a harddrive similar to PC, as in it saves games, music, files info etc.

I would generally guess he means back up everything like that?

Not sure though.

Hi again,

The 360 dvd drive has a " key " installed so it'll only work with the unit it was installed in.

To change the drive you have to extract the key and install it into the new drive.

My current drive is starting to play up and will only play a game 20- 30 % of the time so I need to extract the key so I can install a new drive.

Otherwise I have to buy a new complete 360 unit ( Which seems daft )

After many hours reading up on the internet I've found the best way to do this is by using a Sata pci card with the Via 6421 Chipset and a program called iprep ,

So I bought the card and downloaded iprep it's just as soon as I put the card into the pci slot and try turn on the pc it freezes on load up,

I tried the same on my daughters pc and it does the same, I thought i'd get some expert advice before deciding my next step

Thanks

Hello Dean

We have a specific rule which prohibits our getting involved in password issues.

On the grounds that we are never able to validate the methods of acquisition of hardware and software and therefore the legal possession of said items we are unable to provide solutions to circumvent password protection on hardware or software, this also applies to password protected files.
This appears a good time to explain "the why" behind the rule for you and others. We are not the PC Police and often get annoyed at certain password and license restrictions. We know that some are simply unfair. To me this is one of those times.

While in one respect this is no different then someone who needs to install a new hard drive on a legal Windows PC. (something that we would certainly help with.) It still remains a password issue.

It is probably closer to an example from the other day where a member had a legal System and was trying to install a new motherboard that had a password protected BIOS. We could not help him either.

While for some this may be a moral or legal issue, the fact remains that we are not big enough to fight major manufacturers or software providers should they try to go after us for helping people violate their patents or copyrights.

I know there are some forums that seem to exist for the pure pleasure of helping people "beat the system," but that is not what Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help is all about.

Unfortunately there seems to be no reason to keep this thread open.
