Hi guys

I'm not sure if this is the right bit to post this in (mods please move as appropriate)

I've just fitted a Liteon 20x DVD rewriter to my Packard Bell computer (which is about 5 years old and using XP Home). The DVD writer is working fine but for some reason I have lost all sound from my desktop speakers - I've checked that the volume controls are up and that the Realtek 97 has no fault. Any suggestions as to what might've happened. Please be gentle - I'm not too au fait with tech stuff.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Dav

Welcome to FPCH

Is this a case of just no sound when playing a cd/dvd or just no sound in windows in general?

Hi Wolfeymole

No sound at all; no start up sound, no Radio 5 live, no Windows Media. Power is on to the speakers - I'm baffled (which, when it comes to PC's isn't hard :D)

Do you have a sound card or onboard as you may have inadvertently slightly dislodged the card if so.

I've checked that the volume controls are up and that the Realtek 97 has no fault.

The AC97 is indeed an onboard card (part of the motherboard.)

How did you determine that it has no fault. Did you check in device manager to see it there is a yellow triangle?

Try going to control panel then click sounds and audio devices and then the audio tab. Make sure that the Realtek shows as the default device under "sound Playback" If it does not change it so that it does.

It was kind of an amalgamation of several internet sources; forums and the like. I basically just checked the volume panel and the sounds and audio devices in control panel.
