Hi, you might remember I got an external sound card for my laptop a while back and use it the majority of the time as the sound quality is slightly better and it means I don't have cables coming out the front of the laptop.

Now the external sound card works fine with the laptops built in one, when its not plugged in the built in speakers work etc.

However, its dawned on me that some how the windows sounds don't work when using the external card, only the laptops built in one, but I can't find anything that lets you control the sounds the two sound cards play.

So not really sure what I've done but is there a way of correcting it, thanks.

Why didn't you just buy a set of active speakers Shrimps?

OK, so this may not be the answer you wanted, but because I don't have a clue what active speakers are.

Yeah I have a set plugged into the external sound card, the thing is none of the windows will come through the external sound card.

Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

Hi Shrimply, I don't have a true external on my laptop, I use the "Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook" which basically plugs into the slot on the side of the laptop, however All the different beeps, boinks, bells and Windows whistles come out of my loudspeakers OK. What type is your external sound card, make and model etc, and how does it connect to the laptop, is it USB, or some other connection?

Thanks for the link so I could see it and its spec's, First, I would like to know which Windows sounds does it not play that the internal one does? has it previously played those sounds but not now? if yes to the second question, then find the disk it came with, then uninstall it in "remove programs" and re-install the drivers from the disk, see if that helps.

Hi, sorry this is going to sound stupid but I really don't know what sounds don't work. Emm I just know the computer is a lot more noisy when using the built in speakers, lol.

The welcome sounds definitely don't work but I presumed that was because it hadn't loaded the drivers at that point???

But also emptying the recycle bin, the noise when a usb device is added or removed, the noise when windows mail comes through. Sorry thats all I could come up with, although I'd say its all the windows sounds, but right now its hard to say for certain.

I really don't know if they worked or not, I'll try reinstalling anyway and let you know how it goes.

Thanks

Just a very silly question but could be vital :P

have you checked that the Windows Sounds volume is turned up when you have the extrernal sound card plugged in.

If you're not sure how to do this, right click on the volume icon in the system tray [bottom right] and select open volume mixer.

with the box that pops up it should display all applications that require sound and their volumes. the very first one should be Windows sounds. Just check that is set to full.
