Guest Wolfeymole Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Unfortunately no Bob as OE is an intrinsic part of Windows. Just don't use OE. Quote

BeeCeeBee Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 (edited) It would probably make more sense to simply remove the accounts and render OE moot. I may be wrong but I do not think it can be simply removed and certainly not from the control panel in XP at least. By the way I use gmail extensivly and have it forwarded to OE using POP3 and it still keeps everything in gmail even email I send from OE. Goku Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Hello Bob. Outlook Express can be removed but it is not an easy procedure. There are a thousand things that can go wrong and therefore only consider removing it if you think you can handle the procedure effectively. Here is a step-by-step guide on doing it. There are other ways too like using "OS strippers" but you are happier if you stay away from them. Hope that helps. :) -- Goku Quote

BeeCeeBee Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Tootech has properly pointed out that if you go into add or remove programs and then click on add/remove windows components that Outlook Express is listed for removal. Saying that no one quite believes that it actually removes the program from the system. The real question that needs to be answered before you try any of this is WHY? Unless you believe that it is doing some harm (unlikely) why not simply ignore it. If it has no mail accounts it will be essentially inert. Remove the desktop icon and forget it is there. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain

Tootech Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Just ckecked, the c:\Program Files\Outlook Express\ folder and its contents remain. After removal from Add/Remove Windows Components, Outlook Express is no longer the default mail client. Yes, the files are still there, but they are not used, and will not be unless you reinstall it. Perhaps the easiest removal process ever? Quote

bob12a Posted December 19, 2008 Author Posted December 19, 2008 A big thank you all I should explain better, Nev knows I expect other people to know what I am thinking:-) This was my reason for trying to get rid of outlook express After years of trying to get my 70 year old friend to start using a computer. He got one last week. Not quite the blind leading the blind but I have to ease him in to using it now. He has very little patience. After putting the basic protection on it for him (with the help of this and another forum) the 2 things I want him to do is wait for bootup to finish. My way for him and others I help is to put Mailwasher on their comps and tell them to wait until they see MW on the screen The 2nd is to use Gmail as his email. Now as you may know in MW when you process mail it defaults to outlook express ( have not found a way to default to Gmail) I am allowing him to process mail in MW (no default)Then close MW and just just launch Gmail from desktop. i know after a few weeks he will settle into using the comp But for now I have to ease him in because of his lack of patience BTW I would never use a computer without my Mailwasher Pro. RandyL Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Deleting Outlook Express is not what you want to do. For one thing if he just got a computer it will likely have Vista which uses Windows Mail not OE. OK then. Mailwasher Pro is mainly meant to be used with an email client not web based mail. Changing the default email program to a different client is an option but he likely just has the one. Like any mail washer program some mails that are legit may get deleted. These programs are not 100% and have to be configured properly but they can be of some help. As for Gmail and Mailwasher Pro take a look at Can I use Gmail with MailWasher Pro? That is from the Setup & Accounts in Frequently Asked Questions I hope that gives you some insight bob. Quote We are all members helping other members. BeeCeeBee Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 (edited) Bob I cannot agree with Randy more. One of the great benefits of using gmail with a mail client such as Outlook Express or Windows Mail is that if set properly gmail retains a copy on its server even if you never use it's web based facility. Your Mailwasher instructions specifically eliminates that feature. Edited December 19, 2008 by BeeCeeBee Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
