Guest Art Cabot Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 I had to move some folders from one 2003 server to another and now people can't write to them. The properties show "Read Only" on the folder, the AD Group has Modify rights and the same group has all rights to the share. They can write if they go to the share, but not if they have a drive mapped (via login script) directly to the folder. I've never been totally up-to-speed on Windows rights, but I'm really trying to understand this. Anybody have a clue for me? -- Art Cabot Director, Information Technology Sizemore, Inc.
Guest Anthony Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Re: Confused About Folder Rights Art, In the Advanced part of the Security tab you have a couple of options to re-apply permissions. You probably need to use those. Guest RedCellNL Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Re: Confused About Folder Rights The rights are being inherited from the parant folder. Stop inheretance and change the rights or change the rights on the parant folder. Guest Art Cabot Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Re: Confused About Folder Rights Been there, done that, didn't work. Besides, if they didn't have Windows rights would they be able to have rights to the share? All of these folders come up as "Read Only" and I can't unset the attribute. Plus, Effective Permissions says they DO have rights. Is it the attribute that's the problem and, if so, why can't I unset it? -- Art Cabot Director, Information Technology Sizemore, Inc. I don't think permissions are copied with folders If i log in as me to look at properties on a shared folder, I can't change the readonly checkbox. If i log in as the creator/owner, I can change that little checkbox but I don't really think that's your problem as the box is shaded as read only on the folder I'm looking at, not checked. If the share permissions explicitly deny read or change then that will overide the ntfs permissions. If you can take ownership of the folder, you can do anything you want with it.
