TS Licensing for four sessions...

I currently have four XP users using RDC from a remote location to connect to

four local XP clients to run some Access queries that would put an enormouse

strain on our connection to them.

 

I'd like to setup a Win 2k3 server for them to all connect simultaneously

via TS to run the queries/reports. I've read that I'll need a TS license

server to manage the licenses. Is this correct, even for only four

simulaneous sessions? We already have an EA with MS, but I'm not sure if TS

CALs are included.

 

Could someone confirm this, and offer some suggestions or recommendations?

That's correct.

You need to install a Terminal Services Licensing Server, this

service can run on the same server as the TS or on any other

Windows 2003 server in the domain.

Then you must activate the LS, buy TS CALs (one for every user or

client who connects to the TS) and install those TS CALs on the TS

Licensing Server.

Since Server 2003 supports 2 sessions (not including console), will I need to

purchase 2 additional CALs or will I need to purchase 4 CALs?

When you install terminal Service, only the session to the console

will be without TS CAL requirements. So if you have a maximum of 4

simultaneous connecting users, you will need 4 TS CALs.

You, as Administrator, will be able to connect to the console

without a TS CAL.
