devlin Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Hi Again all I hope someone can help me with this I have just recently reinstalled xp on a laptop satelite pro, its working fine except that I would like to enable it's wireless facility, I have dowloaded the LAN, wireless modem,, bluetooth stack, utility's drivers from Toshiba's web site, some download then install automatically some just download and there is my problem when I open the file(s) I have no idea which icon does what. I have tried opening them but I am clueless as what to do with them, I have tried using the evaluation version of winzip also and as far as I am concerned thats about as clear as drinking chocolate. Thanks Dev Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Do you know what downloaded and installed? Go to your control panel and open System. Click on Hardware and then device manager. Take a look at the network connections. Is there a yellow triangle at your wireless device. Is the driver information (version) the same as what you have just downloaded? devlin Posted December 21, 2008 Author Posted December 21, 2008 Hi and thanks As soon as my wife gets of the lappy I will check it out Dev Quote
Tootech Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Can you post a link to one of the downloads you are not sure about. Also, it's not too clear, is your lappy wireless enabled, but at the moment is doesn't work? Quote

BeeCeeBee Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 (edited) The file you have linked is a zip file. A Zip file is a compacted file that needs to be extracted (basically opened and put together into a usable file on your pc) I do not know if you have an extractor or (unzipper) on your PC. The best way to find out is go where the zip file is stored and open the folder containing it. Right click on the file itself. If you see the option to "extract with" or "extract here" you are probably ready to unzip the file. If you know where you want to keep the file that will be extracted you can select a destination. Othewise just selct extract here. If no such option exists you will have download one. Many members here recommend 7zip although I have not used it myself. It is freeware. 7-Zip I suspect that you do not have software to extract a zip file. I say this because when I clicked on the link it gave me a choice of saving or extract and run (open with.) My guess is that you have simply saved it somewhere. Edited December 22, 2008 by BeeCeeBee Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Tootech Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 That particular file appears to not have an installer. The easiest way to install the drivers is navigate to the Device Manager, look for you network adapter, which will probably have a yellow exclamation mark next to it. Whilst hovering your mouse over it, right click and select update driver. You then have to tell Windows where to find the driver files, so point it at the extracted files from the link you gave us. That should be all you need to do. Also, I'm unsure as to whether or not the file you linked is the wireless LAN driver, the install info defines this " Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapters ; PnP install script for Windows 2000 and XP" which I think is a standard ethernet port driver. Can you let us know the exact model of your lappy, looking at the Toshiba site, there are loads, for example A series, L series etc, and we should be able to find the right driver for you. I looked here for drivers Toshiba - Laptop Driver Downloads: Quote
devlin Posted December 24, 2008 Author Posted December 24, 2008 Hi I have been on the site you mention and downloaded the wireless LAN driver for stelite pro sp6100 1.6 14'' on xp it downloads ok and I can unzip it into I think 6 different icons, files or whatever but I can do nothing with them and there is no mention of them in device manager although the other drivers I downloaded are in the list. the lappy works fine with a cable into the wirless modem and the wireless switch is on.One other thing that I have just thought of is how can I tell if the machine is wireless capable or ready I am just taking it for granted cos the place I bought it from said it was but that was a while ago before broadband was widely available even let alone wireless. Dev ps maybe the best thing is to buy a dongle thingy Quote
Tootech Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 (edited) Hi Devlin, If you go back to beeceebee's first post in this thread he tells you how to get to Device Manager. Go back and have a look, then navigate to Device Manager. Once there look down the list. If you have a wireless card, and it is installed correctly you will see it below the normal ethernet adapter. Have a look at this Look at Network adapters - it tells me I have a wireless connection/adapter. Look below that, there is a yellow question mark over a device. Your wireless adapter may look like that if no driver is installed. If it has the yellow question mark or exclamation mark over it you can install the driver, but not using the normal method. If you don't see a wireless adapter, and have no yellow question/exclamation marks over devices then assume you don't have one installed. Look here Can you see I hovered the mouse over the device and then did a Right Click of the mouse. That's how you get to install the driver. It actually says Update Driver. Take no notice, it's actually a driver install! Select Update Driver, then the Hardware Update Wizard will start - 1st question, click No, Not This Time, then Install From A Specific Location....... Now here's the good bit - you can then browse to the folder containing the funny driver files you have described. Once there click OK, then Next and the driver will be installed.
