And is your PC still running slowly?, please can you define what you mean by slowly, examples etc.

yep still slow. 'my computer' takes bout ten min to load as well as 'add/remove programs' for example. when loading up it asks if i want to load normally; safe mode or last known good config. after windows is on screen takes a couple of minutes to starting tune to go and thins to load. wound shut down...just gets to either 'saving your settings' or 'windows is shutting down' and frezzes. Internet run smooth though. aswell as games ect.

Okay David, follow these next instrustions carefully.

 

Your computer could be infected with Malware.

• Required Cleanup Steps
  
  1. Disable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled
     
  2. Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF)
     
  3. Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below)
     
  4. Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below)
     
  5. Clear out old System Restore points
     
  6. If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file, do not do so unless requested.
     

   

The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something.

The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed.

Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes.

The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours.

In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer.

Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean.

STEP 1

• Disable Spybot Search & Destroys' TEA TIMER: (if installed, if not go to Step 2)
  
  
  1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
     
     
  2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
     
     
  3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
     
     
  4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
     
     
  5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
     
     
  6. Restart your computer.

STEP 2

• Follow these instructions carefully.
  
  
• Download ATF-Cleaner from
  Snapfiles.com
  to remove un-needed temporary files from your computer that may contain malware.
  
  
• When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main.
  
  
• For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox
  
  
• NOTE:
  If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored
  
  
• Then click on "Empty Selected".

STEP 3

• Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from
  SUPERAntiSpyware.com
  
  
  • Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files.
    
    
  • You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next.
    
    
  • You can leave the automated check for updates on.
    
    
  • You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information.
    
    
  • DO NOT
    allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings.
    
    
  • On the
    Top Left
    select the
    Scan your computer
    button.
    
    
  • Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all
    Fixed Drives
    .
    
    
  • Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" to Repair issues found and reboot the computer when prompted to do so.

STEP 4

• Install and run
  Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  from
  Malwarebytes - (direct download)
  
  
  • Accept all defaults for the installer
    
    
  • Allow the program to update the definitions
    
    
  • Click on the
    Quick Scan
    and click Next.
    
    
  • If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer.

STEP 5

• Run an online scan with ESET from
  Free Virus Scan: Use ESET's Online Antivirus Scanner
  
  
  • You
    must
    use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan.
    
    
  • If your computer is running Window's Vista, then you
    must first
    start Internet Explorer as an Administrator. To do so, right-click on the
    Internet Explorer
    icon in the Start Menu and select "
    Run as administrator
    " from the popup context menu.
    
    
   
  • Accept the terms and click "Start".
    
    
  • Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications".
    
    
  • Click "Start" to begin the scan.
    
    
  • When completed restart your computer

Make sure your internet firewall security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating.

At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted.

Once you and the Technician agree that your system appears to be clean then you should delete all your System Restore points and recreate a new one.

Ok Dave we seem to be getting nowhere fast on this one so I suggest you do a Repair Install of XP, this method will repair all damaged system files and leave your stuff intact.

 

You could of course back up all your stuff to an external drive if this is a laptop or another internal drive, if fitted, if it's a desktop, and do a complete new install.

Hi Dave, once you have followed Wolfies advice regarding the Windows repair, providing it works out OK, you may then find a problem in getting the Windows updates, which after a successful repair you should download and install them.

Here is an article from Microsoft with an explanation of the update problem and instructions for how to fix it.-

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

tried to reinstall xp from boot but after i pressed enter to say i wanted to install xp a message appeared telling me 'setup did not find and hard disk drives installed on your computer'.

Did you alter the first boot sequence in the Bios to CDROM 1st?

 

Sounds to me like your HDD is dead

yeah set it to load from cd first. how would i check if it was dead?

First of all, if you are fine with checking the inside of your PC, open it up and make sure the cables to the HDD and the mobo are plugged in properly, I once had that problem and just happened to have knocked one out accidently, check that first and if it still says the same thing then might have to check if your HDD is alive or not.

 

Once all is connected properly, and if it is still not working, please could you copy down and reply with what the POST screen of your PC shows when you boot up,

opened pc and checked hard drive. was ok. at post screen all that happened was the 1024mb loading and the ethernet boot agent and pc description.

Did it display your HDD as the Master drive when it ran through the POST?

i dont no because when it goes through post it doesnt display any thing on the screen. but i dont think the hdd is the reason for the pc going slow as i tried to reinstall xp months ago and got the same program but the pc was running fine.

When you boot up it will show the POST screen, similar to this.

In this picture we have a Western Digital HDD set has Primary Master and the CDROM set as Secondary Master.

 

If you cannot see a Primary drive then either the drive is dead or not properly connected.

i'm not gettin a screen like that. it just goes to hp screen with options '(f9 boot menu) (f10 setup)' ect.

Ok so in theory your HDD is fine, what I can't understand is your earlier statement where you said the HDD could not be found. :confused:

neither do i. it was when i tried to reinstall xp tht it says it cant find a hdd. i contacted hp months and months ago but they were absolutely usless as they would ask me to do somthing then phone back about two months later to see how it went. i ended up fixing the problem tht time myself. so i dont think the fact tht the xp installer cant find a hdd is the problem for the computer running so slow.

Ok reboot and press F10 to get into Setup, change the boot order to CDROM, this will probably under the Advanced tab, insert the XP disk, SAVE the changes and exit the bios.

 

You should then be presented with a screen that says "Press any key to boot from CD"

 

Have the sata driver floppy to hand as it will ask you for it later.
