I just bought a Pentium 4 PC from eBay with 256M memory. It runs slowly. I added another 256M memory and it made no difference except perhaps running even slower. The PC was received empty but installed with XP. All I've done is to install AVG.

For example to double click the internet icon takes 15 seconds plus to load and every thing is so slow including starting up the PC. Any ideas please?

As an experiment I started in safe mode with networking and it seemed to work alot faster if that's a clue?

I'd definitely uninstall AVG and consider one of the product listed here as an alternative.

So apart from AVG and your ISP software no other programs are installed?

I got the PC blank apart from XP. Installed AVG and ZoneAlarm. Then removed completely

removed ZoneAlarm and installed Microsoft Works. That's it!! Haven't found problems with AVG in the past??

Ok

Why install MS Works when we are trying to cut the system down to a bare bones operation to discover why it's slow?

Can you drop a screen shot of what it says when you right click My Computer and choose Properties in the main screen with regard to, even though you maintain you have a P4 and 512MB, just what's going on here please.

EDIT: sorry I explained the really hard and long way..

the easier way is when you click on "post reply" scroll down to "addtional options" and in the section called "manage attachments" click on that button and then click on "browse" at the top and find your file, then click on upload

and then post your reply.

Screenshot showing properties of PC

The screenshot should be attached and show that the memory is

less than 512, 504 I think. The existing memory is 256M PC2100 DDR.

The supplier sent me 256M DDR PC3200!!

Don't know if this is the problem but I fitted the new memory twice

and it came back with the same total memory size,
