RandyL Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Hi Mary; Have you looked in Device manager for any yellow or red exclamation marks. That would indicate a possible driver issue. Click on System in the Control Panel (Classic view). Click the hardware tab. Click Device manager. Click on the + by sound if need be. Can you tell us the exact make, model and number of your computer? Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Plastic Nev Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 You should also be able to get that information by a double click (if set that way) on "Sound and Audio Devices". That should also tell you the type and make of your sound system, post that as well please. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. Guest Wolfeymole Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Mary When you right clicked on the item to update the driver and the wizard popped up and said "Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for Software" did you choose "Yes, this time only"? If so restart the wizard and this time choose; "No, not at this time". Click Next. In the next box that pops up click; "Install from a list or specific location". Click Next In the next pop up choose; "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install". Click Next. In the next pop up which is headed "Select the manufacturer and model of your hardware device and then click next", choose Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio and then click Next. The driver should then install and you should be ok. Quote

Maryytheresa Posted December 23, 2008 Author Posted December 23, 2008 (edited) Hi Goku , Thank You but after I had uninstalled it, I rebooted and then ran the new device wizard but it did not find anything Edited December 23, 2008 by DirtyPolo Quote
Goku Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Fix Windows Audio.reg OK Marry, it is time to try Microsoft's last suggestion for a solution. Please download the attached archive and extract it. If you are unsure on how to open the archive, use the instructions from here and continue. After you have extracted the archive, you should obtain a file labeled Fix Windows Audio.reg. Double-click on the file and you will be asked whether you want to import the information into the registry or not. Answer Yes to the prompt and sometime later another dialog box will pop up informing you that the operation was successful. Reboot your computer. Note: Please backup your registry before you apply any of the above changes so that we can revert back your system to working condition if something goes awry. Is the sound restored? Let us know if it helps or not. Good Luck. :) -- Goku Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 (edited) Hi again Mary, If Goku, s suggestion doesn't work, or is too difficult to follow, please follow this instruction completely, First click on "start" then click "Control Panel" and once it has opened, click or double click on "Sounds and Audio devices" If your control panel is set to "Category View you should click "Sound and audio devices" again. A box should open called "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties". On the tabs at the top click "Audio" please tell us what is in that box. If possible post a screen shot of that box, but don't worry if you can't. Nev. Edited December 23, 2008 by Plastic Nev Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Maryytheresa Posted December 23, 2008 Author Posted December 23, 2008 (edited) I tried that link but it took me to windows update, which I have tried already in between posts I also tried downloading the driver from Asus's website as that is my motherboard but everytime i tried to install it, it said "cannot find driver, please restart the system and run setup again" and this came up everytime i restarted and tried again. DirtyPolo Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 I am a little confused as after searching around, most people with the same problem are advised to download the realtek driver from their mobo's website, yet Asus don't have a realtek'97 driver for download, only a SoundMAX driver... :S Quote Cooler Master HAF 932Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.3GHzAsus P5K Premium Black Pearl2GB OCZ reaper 1066MHZATI Radeon HD4850Pictures!
