Guest George Schneider Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Stange issue. Since lat the C primary boot partition on my array is down to about 4 mb of free space this is a 16 GB drive. This just strated happening. I can't figure out where the sapce has gone. The only program installed on C other than the typical windows stuff is MSDE also on C. Unfortuantly the person who set this server up installed everything on C instead of the other partition E which has 45 GB free and this issue would not be happening. DO you think MSDE could be eating away the space or causing some form of problem with space. I know they can't grow beyond 2 GB in size which i believe the biggest one is aboutb 200 MB. Just very strange this issue just started happening in the last week and nothing has chnaged on the server.

In particular uninstalling MSDE and re-installing on the other drive might be of interest to you. We run our DC (hosting file server and App Server for database serving entire design, manufacture, and sales functions) with 7.84 Gbyte of C: drive, currently 1.54Gbyte is free. I freed up space on the C: drive by following steps: 1) 1.5Gbyte - Move most of C:\pagefile.sys to D: Create a new file D:\pagefile.sys, min = 1536Mbyte, max = 1536Mbyte Modify file C:\pagefile.sys, min = 128Mbyte, max = 128Mbyte Use regedit.exe to set HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Mnager\Memory Management ClearPageFileAtShutdown DWORD 0 => 1 Takes effect when you re-boot. 2) 1Gbyte - Move all folders C:\windows\$nt*uninst* to D:\exc_windows\ You can't uninstall MS updates to your operating system without moving them back, but in 2 years in this job I have never wanted to! 3) 0.65Gbyte - move app software If you have install CD or download, uninstall from C:\Program Files\ and re-install in D:\moved_programs\ These changes have been in place for at least 12 months with no problems. -- Newell White
Guest Justin Rich Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Re: Hard Drive Space if you are all of a sudden losing disk space chances are its either data coming in from users or from logs.. just need to figure out which is which.. and where its going... doing properties on a folder will let you know whats going on.. key places to check are documents and settings (should be pretty small, maybe a few hundred meg at MOST), program files (if this is too large its from user data most likely, or logs from an app like exchange), or the windows folder (typically logs if this is too large) just dig down from there, find where the space went and delete or move it..
