Problems with Startup Screen

Help!! I have started to encounter problems with my start up screen after sign on. All is normal until i wait for the icons to appear - and they do not. If they do, only for a few seconds then disappear again. I am having to start up everything via task manager and cannot get some things to work. Any ideas? Only happened over past 24 hours.

Hey Nick, this sounds to me like an explorer.exe problem,

 

When you start up your PC and nothing appears, can you start up task manager and check on the processes tab for a process called Explorer.exe, please tell me if it is running or not.

Thanks for this - i have restarted and got blank screen again. explorer.exe does not appear in the processes list (have searched up and down!)

Okay well for a temporary fix, when you load up, open task manager then go to "file" then "new task (run)" I believe, then in the box type "explorer.exe" minus the quotes and press enter, then it should manually start, use this as a temporary fix until we can solve it for you :)

Many thanks. I think you are onto something here!!

 

I put explorer.exe in the run box and it then appeared on the process list and the toolbar / icons appeared. They then, after a few seconds, disappeared and i noticed that explorer.exe had disappeared from the process list. It then reappeared but is cutting out every 10 seconds or so (which means that i need to keep reclicking in this box to type this!). Every time it drops off the process list, the icons / control bar disappear.

 

For info, the 'cpu' reading jumps all over the place and mem usage climbs to around 26,500 before it disappears.

Trying to follow the advice given by Wolfey but not sure how to find or create the DWORD value in the right pane (etc). Could you give me more specific guidance here? Can get down to the explorer key, but at that stage the right pane only has one thing in it (Default REG_SZ not set).

Hello Nick. What you state is commonly a symptom of a Malware infestation. Please run our computer through our disinfection procedure and see if it resolves the problem or not.
