Guest chail Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 if i ping a host, ping -a 10.x.x.x, i recieve an incorrect response. the hostname is wrong. i have tried to flush the dns resolver cache (ipconfig /flushdns). then if i try again i might get a different response. what could be causing this.
Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Re: ping problems. suggestions appreciated Hello, Check your dns, both reverse and domain zone. Check that this host doesn't have more than one entry in the dns domain zone. -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com French blog: http://www.lotp.fr "chail" <chail@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:6F8A2ADB-36F4-4934-BC87-AA5EBAE7C8ED@microsoft.com... > if i ping a host, ping -a 10.x.x.x, i recieve an incorrect response. the > hostname is wrong. > > i have tried to flush the dns resolver cache (ipconfig /flushdns). > > then if i try again i might get a different response. > > what could be causing this.
Guest chail Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Re: ping problems. suggestions appreciated there are some double in the reverse lookup zone. some have the fqdn and others do not. i assume the fqdn names are the ones i want to keep. would that be correct? thank you. -- Chail "Mathieu CHATEAU" wrote: > Hello, > > Check your dns, both reverse and domain zone. > Check that this host doesn't have more than one entry in the dns domain > zone. > > -- > Cordialement, > Mathieu CHATEAU > English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com > French blog: http://www.lotp.fr > > > "chail" <chail@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:6F8A2ADB-36F4-4934-BC87-AA5EBAE7C8ED@microsoft.com... > > if i ping a host, ping -a 10.x.x.x, i recieve an incorrect response. the > > hostname is wrong. > > > > i have tried to flush the dns resolver cache (ipconfig /flushdns). > > > > then if i try again i might get a different response. > > > > what could be causing this. > >
Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Re: ping problems. suggestions appreciated That's right, PTR should only have FQDN in the reverse zone -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com French blog: http://www.lotp.fr "chail" <chail@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:67194E56-D267-42B1-9279-C4CFA6BE0AB7@microsoft.com... > there are some double in the reverse lookup zone. some have the fqdn and > others do not. i assume the fqdn names are the ones i want to keep. would > that be correct? thank you. > -- > Chail > > > "Mathieu CHATEAU" wrote: > >> Hello, >> >> Check your dns, both reverse and domain zone. >> Check that this host doesn't have more than one entry in the dns domain >> zone. >> >> -- >> Cordialement, >> Mathieu CHATEAU >> English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com >> French blog: http://www.lotp.fr >> >> >> "chail" <chail@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> news:6F8A2ADB-36F4-4934-BC87-AA5EBAE7C8ED@microsoft.com... >> > if i ping a host, ping -a 10.x.x.x, i recieve an incorrect response. >> > the >> > hostname is wrong. >> > >> > i have tried to flush the dns resolver cache (ipconfig /flushdns). >> > >> > then if i try again i might get a different response. >> > >> > what could be causing this. >> >>
Guest chail Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Re: ping problems. suggestions appreciated Thank you for your suggestions. they have been very helpful. i have just one more question. should i delet all non fqdn ptr records? even if they are not multiples? thanks so much. i greatly appreciate it. -- Chail "Mathieu CHATEAU" wrote: > That's right, PTR should only have FQDN in the reverse zone > > > -- > Cordialement, > Mathieu CHATEAU > English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com > French blog: http://www.lotp.fr > > > "chail" <chail@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:67194E56-D267-42B1-9279-C4CFA6BE0AB7@microsoft.com... > > there are some double in the reverse lookup zone. some have the fqdn and > > others do not. i assume the fqdn names are the ones i want to keep. would > > that be correct? thank you. > > -- > > Chail > > > > > > "Mathieu CHATEAU" wrote: > > > >> Hello, > >> > >> Check your dns, both reverse and domain zone. > >> Check that this host doesn't have more than one entry in the dns domain > >> zone. > >> > >> -- > >> Cordialement, > >> Mathieu CHATEAU > >> English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com > >> French blog: http://www.lotp.fr > >> > >> > >> "chail" <chail@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > >> news:6F8A2ADB-36F4-4934-BC87-AA5EBAE7C8ED@microsoft.com... > >> > if i ping a host, ping -a 10.x.x.x, i recieve an incorrect response. > >> > the > >> > hostname is wrong. > >> > > >> > i have tried to flush the dns resolver cache (ipconfig /flushdns). > >> > > >> > then if i try again i might get a different response. > >> > > >> > what could be causing this. > >> > >> > >
Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Re: ping problems. suggestions appreciated yes, they are somehow useless without a domain. You may investigate to understand how they were created anyway. -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com French blog: http://www.lotp.fr "chail" <chail@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:4EAB9CEB-D36D-4D64-99B1-8FFD43A806D8@microsoft.com... > Thank you for your suggestions. they have been very helpful. i have just > one > more question. > > should i delet all non fqdn ptr records? even if they are not multiples? > > thanks so much. i greatly appreciate it. > -- > Chail > > > "Mathieu CHATEAU" wrote: > >> That's right, PTR should only have FQDN in the reverse zone >> >> >> -- >> Cordialement, >> Mathieu CHATEAU >> English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com >> French blog: http://www.lotp.fr >> >> >> "chail" <chail@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> news:67194E56-D267-42B1-9279-C4CFA6BE0AB7@microsoft.com... >> > there are some double in the reverse lookup zone. some have the fqdn >> > and >> > others do not. i assume the fqdn names are the ones i want to keep. >> > would >> > that be correct? thank you. >> > -- >> > Chail >> > >> > >> > "Mathieu CHATEAU" wrote: >> > >> >> Hello, >> >> >> >> Check your dns, both reverse and domain zone. >> >> Check that this host doesn't have more than one entry in the dns >> >> domain >> >> zone. >> >> >> >> -- >> >> Cordialement, >> >> Mathieu CHATEAU >> >> English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com >> >> French blog: http://www.lotp.fr >> >> >> >> >> >> "chail" <chail@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> >> news:6F8A2ADB-36F4-4934-BC87-AA5EBAE7C8ED@microsoft.com... >> >> > if i ping a host, ping -a 10.x.x.x, i recieve an incorrect response. >> >> > the >> >> > hostname is wrong. >> >> > >> >> > i have tried to flush the dns resolver cache (ipconfig /flushdns). >> >> > >> >> > then if i try again i might get a different response. >> >> > >> >> > what could be causing this. >> >> >> >> >> >>
