Guest Neufusion Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 How to determine the appropriate page file size for 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889654/ The article stated "When lots of memory is added to a computer, a paging file may not be required.". and "If you have enough RAM installed in your computer, you may not require a page file at all, unless one is required by a specific application." Has anyone out there ever seen a server that is able to run without a page file? If so, what were it's specs and what was running on it?
Guest Justin Rich Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Re: When is no page file required? there is no magic number. you would have to monitor the system to see what is needed. how much memory do you have? what are the roles of the server? what is the load on the server? it has more to do with what the server is doing and less to do with the resources, at least, once you pass the standard server mark. any server with over 4GB of ram, you can start to consider it. we have some servers with 16GB and we dont run a page file because of how they are used, it works out well for us. basically the short answer is, do some testing. each situation is different. I have not... but if you think about what the page file does, you realize that in certain circumstances, it may not be required. A page file allows you to utilize disk storage as additional RAM. So, if you have an abundance of RAM that may be the situation where you may not need the page file. Personally, though, I have not used Windows without one. -- Jack Doyle, Systems Engineer ScriptLogic Corporation http://www.scriptlogic.com
