My problem, is with my daughters new toshiba L300 satellite laptop.I know it has vista home premium installed. When we switch it on it goes through the routine, gets to the language options then a black screen comes up with all the self checking results on.It then tells us to press any key.The word windows 32 comes up then nothing, the cursor just flashes on & off!

Is it requesting some sort of command which I have to type in?

any advice would really be appreciated , she wants to get on it like yesterday.

Thanks, merry Christmas

If this is the very first attempt to boot and you have never used the lappy before I would suggest that you use the product recovery disc that comes with the Toshiba.

While this will wipe all data and start over with a clean system, that should not be a problem if there is nothing of yours (or hers) on the machine to lose.

Thanks , but I do not have any sort of disk with the laptop.I really should have windows vista disk in my opinion.I brought it from Staples. I fear I may have to phone Toshiba or take it back to staples. Trouble is I cannot do anything until the 27th.

I am not a Vista user and have no idea if what I am going to tell you is correct however I have read elsewhere that a flashing cursor is not that uncommon with new Vista install. It has been suggested that the sleep settings in bios should be checked. I have seen S3 suggested. Again. this is strictly from an outside source.

Ok I do not like giving advice where I am not qualified but I did look in the bios (XP System) and the only thing I can find that may be meaningful is in advanced. Be sure that wake up on keyboard is enabled.

Otherwise keep watch on Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help for some real expert advice.

I will say this. If it must go back to Staples insist on a new machine. You should not have to send a machine that has never booted for repair. Otherwise just insist on a return and buy it elswhere. I doubt if staples has any in store expertise.

Thanks. I think its a return to Staples job now.I went through the bios options & nothing sticks out as obvious.I do wish these manufacturers checked their machines before sending them out to the paying public.

Agreed!! Just a shame it is Christmas. Do not lose hope though. Just keep checking back here from time to time.

Someone just may know. I hope this does not ruin your daughter's Christmas.
